I disabled the setting on my Samsung TV that allows the Samsung Smart Remote to control Apple TV. If you have a newer Samsung TV, you press the home button on the remote, select Source, select Universal Remote, then disable the remote from controlling Apple TV. Once I did this, Apple TV stays in sleep mode. I think it must be something with the universal remote sending a signal to Apple TV causing it to wake up.

* Solved * Samsung UHD 4K Q7C TV with ATV 4K here. Finally an all black ATV here again! No more white led on forever... What I did:
Thank you all for your input here!
Happy holidays 🙂
Hi. What make/model of TV set is it connected to? There have been reports of some TVs, notably LG, keeping Apple TV 4 awake. This would likely apply to the new 4K as well.
Are you able to force sleep by holding the remote Home button (TV icon), then accepting the popup?
This is happening to me too. I have the 11.1 beta update. Could that be the cause? It is hooked up to a Samsung JS8500 SUHD TV. I am also using the Harmony Elite universal remote to power everything down. I had done this before with no problems. The ATV doesn’t turn off/sleep when turning off with the Harmony remote, but it would still sleep after 15 minutes when everything was off. Now everything turns off but the ATV never sleeps. I have reboot d it several times. I have unplugged it for 10 minutes. Still having the same problem. I would prefer not to have to put it in sleep mode with the ATV remote separately from using my Harmony remote to turn off everything else (TV and sound bar).
My AppleTV 4K is connected to a Denon Receiver, which is connected to a Sony X900E TV and HDMI CEC settings are turned off. When I first set up the AppleTV 4K, it wouldn’t sleep. Apple phone support suggested I reset it and start from scratch, which seemed to fix the issue for one day and from the next day on, AppleTV 4K was sleeping after 4-8 hours although it has been set to sleep after 15 minutes. Then came TVOS 11.2 and now AppleTV 4K sleeps after 24-36 hours, and sometimes never. Has been fully reset twice to no avail. Customer support’s recommendation is to bring it into the store for service.
When the AppleTV 4K is not sleeping for prolonged periods, the screensaver is being displayed. Setting it manually to sleep works just fine and when it sleeps, it stays asleep until the remote is used to wake it up again.
My older AppleTV 4 is in a different room, connected to a Sony HTIB, which is connected to an LG LM7600 TV and on the same home network but has no such issues whatsoever.
Both Apple TVs are on wired ethernet connections and there is an NAS on the network as well. Other than display settings, most other settings are identical between the AppleTV 4K and AppleTV 4 and both are running TV OS 11.2 right now.
If it is being suggested on this message board that the NAS could be keeping the AppleTV 4K from sleeping, why is it not affecting the AppleTV 4?
If I try to put my Apple TV 4K to sleep manually (through settings or by pressing down the home/TV button on the remote), the TV (Samsung) goes to sleep and the status light on the ATV turns off, but about 5 seconds later the status light turns on and stays on. TV still remains in sleep mode. I have a direct connection from ATV to television - no receiver involved. Have tried swapping out the HDMI cord, turning off the HDMI-CEC functionality on TV and turning off, restarting ATV, but nothing seems to work. Status light always turns back on after manually putting it to sleep. Is this happening to anyone else?
Setup an appointment and took my ATV 4K to the apple store yesterday and after waiting for about 20 minutes to be called, the not so "genius" looked at the device asked me what was going on and what all I had done to troubleshoot and without doing any testing on it, handed me a slip, asked me to leave and bring the device back in a few days after my replacement arrives. My work order however states that the guy "observed the issue", which is not true. I asked if I could pick it up at another store and the answer was that none of the 6-7 stores in the area had one in stock, which I find extremely hard to believe.
Needless to say, I was ****** about having to drive back 30 miles to collect my replacement, but I went home and plugged it back in and it has slept in 15 minutes on 3-4 tests I did last evening. I hope it stays this way and the not so "genius" keep the replacement for himself.
Hello,
Here is what I'm going through, and what I think is causing the problem (I just don't know how to fix it).
TV Model - Samsung UN65JS8500
Note - Prior to buying the new 4K Apple TV, I did NOT have this problem. The previous generation Apple TV (same size box just not 4K) would go to sleep as you would expect no matter what state my TV was in.
Now, with the new 4K Apple TV, the auto sleep functionality, and screen saver, will only activate if my TV is currently using the Apple TV's source input. So for instance, if I'm using the Apple TV, then walk away without changing sources or touching anything, the ATV and TV will both be off, asleep after the allotted time.
However, if I finish using the ATV, and switch to my cable source (or any other source), the ATV will stay awake forever. It also appears the screen saver will not activate. This leaves me to believe, my TV is sending some kind of signal to the ATV when the source is not activated, forcing it to stay awake...... it just didn't behave like this with the last ATV, so it leads me to believe something changed in the hardware. Also odd, is when I turn my TV off while being on a different source, the ATV still stays on.... so I have no idea what the "turned off" television would be doing to the ATV to keep it awake.
As I type this, the ATV still has its status light glowing since yesterday evening....
If anyone has any insight into this, recommendations, similar experience so we can at least vent together, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!
Well you may be onto something here because I didn't realize my remote was controlling my Apple TV, which it definitely is. However, I can't find in the settings where you remove the Apple TV as a controllably device. When I go into the universal remote settings, all I see in there is my cable provider as the existing set top box. There is no Apple TV, or any other set top box to delete.
I had that happen a few times where my Samsung TV confused my Apple TV for a cable box. Unplug the HDMI for the Apple TV from your Samsung and plug it back in. It should detect it as an Apple TV. Then try going to Universal Remote settings again.
I had the same problem. I tried everything everoone suggested with no success. I kept messing around with settings and discovered that the culprit was the TV app. I went to settings, Apps, TV Apps Settings and turned off Show Sports Scores and all of the Notifications for the app. That seemed to work so far
My issue has been resolved. It is a combination of Boblive77's recommendation, and a "fluke" I think.
I simply plugged the ATV HDMI cable into another HDMI port on my Samsung TV, and right away, the ATV's sleep behavior began functioning as expected. I did not have to change anything with the universal remote setting.
One thing I noticed; on my TV, my HDMI ports are all titled "HDMI" - but the one that my ATV had been plugged into was titled "HDMI/DVI". Not sure if this has relevance, e.g., related to the ATV, or something that is completely on my TV's side. But now that the ATV is plugged into a standard "HDMI" port, no issues.
Thanks,
Boblive 77, your suggestion worked for me with my Samsung QLED. As soon as I changed the remote setting my ATV 4K went to sleep. I’ll see if it stays that way for the next couple of days before canceling my Genius Bar appointment!!! Thanks a bunch!!!
I had a similar problem. I think, the solution must be sought in the settings of the TV. In my case, Apple TV 4K is connected to the Panasonic TX-58DXR700. And having changed the "TV Remote Settings" (Menu - Network - TV Remote Settings: TV Remote = on, Powered On By Apps = on), the problem was solved.
I have the same problem with my Apple Tv 4k when connected to my Samsung UHD tv. When the apple Tv 4k is connected to an old Insignia HD monitor in a playroom, it works perfectly. Also, I have had an Apple TV 4th gen connected to my Samsung UHD for 18 months and it works perfectly. Ironic, but the Apple TV 4k model doesn't work properly with a 4k tv but functions with an HD set. My local Apple store replaced my original 4k model, so this is actually my second unit...both doing the same thing. I have to believe it is a setting, but have not been able to locate which one it is to correct the problem. I see on forums this is becoming a bigger and bigger issue. it's beyond frustrating.
