I disabled the setting on my Samsung TV that allows the Samsung Smart Remote to control Apple TV. If you have a newer Samsung TV, you press the home button on the remote, select Source, select Universal Remote, then disable the remote from controlling Apple TV. Once I did this, Apple TV stays in sleep mode. I think it must be something with the universal remote sending a signal to Apple TV causing it to wake up.

Hi. What make/model of TV set is it connected to? There have been reports of some TVs, notably LG, keeping Apple TV 4 awake. This would likely apply to the new 4K as well.
Are you able to force sleep by holding the remote Home button (TV icon), then accepting the popup?
* Solved * Samsung UHD 4K Q7C TV with ATV 4K here. Finally an all black ATV here again! No more white led on forever... What I did:
Thank you all for your input here!
Happy holidays 🙂
I had the same problem and just deleted on my Samsung TV the Universal Remote settings for Apple TV. The Apple TV device quickly went to sleep. I have a Samsung UN75MU8000 Model.
I did notice something that might be related. A few months ago, I couldn't turn off the Apple TV device without unplugging the power cord. At some point I begin to have problems the Apple TV Remote the touch pad area was unresponsive, the Apple Remote TV was still "connected" and paired to the TV. During the period of time that the Apple TV Remote wasn't fully working, it wasn't a big deal since the Samsung TV Remote worked fine. While I still had the partially working Apple TV Remote, the Apple TV Device would go to sleep without any problem when I stopped using it or changed the source on the Samsung TV.
Since I could easily control the Apple TV device with my Samsung Remote I didn't bother to replace my Apple TV remote for a few months. This week, after not doing anything with the bad Apple TV remote, I finally requested and received a warranty replacement for the Apple TV Remote. The new Apple TV remote works just as it should and the problem with the Apple TV device not going into sleep mode resurfaced.
I had that happen a few times where my Samsung TV confused my Apple TV for a cable box. Unplug the HDMI for the Apple TV from your Samsung and plug it back in. It should detect it as an Apple TV. Then try going to Universal Remote settings again.
I had the same problem. I tried everything everoone suggested with no success. I kept messing around with settings and discovered that the culprit was the TV app. I went to settings, Apps, TV Apps Settings and turned off Show Sports Scores and all of the Notifications for the app. That seemed to work so far
My issue has been resolved. It is a combination of Boblive77's recommendation, and a "fluke" I think.
I simply plugged the ATV HDMI cable into another HDMI port on my Samsung TV, and right away, the ATV's sleep behavior began functioning as expected. I did not have to change anything with the universal remote setting.
One thing I noticed; on my TV, my HDMI ports are all titled "HDMI" - but the one that my ATV had been plugged into was titled "HDMI/DVI". Not sure if this has relevance, e.g., related to the ATV, or something that is completely on my TV's side. But now that the ATV is plugged into a standard "HDMI" port, no issues.
Thanks,
I had a similar problem. I think, the solution must be sought in the settings of the TV. In my case, Apple TV 4K is connected to the Panasonic TX-58DXR700. And having changed the "TV Remote Settings" (Menu - Network - TV Remote Settings: TV Remote = on, Powered On By Apps = on), the problem was solved.
In trying to troubleshoot why my 4K ATV was not going to sleep, with my Samsung UHD TV, I found the following:
- It does not matter what HDMI input on the TV was used.
- It does not matter if the Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) control on the TV was on or off.
- It DID matter what the the resolution of the ATV 4K was set at:
4K-HDR: no sleep
4K-SDR: no sleep
1080HD-HDR: no sleep
1080HD-SDR: SLEEP
I just upgraded to Apple TV 4th gen and realized this bug immediately. Not first time Samsung JS8500 has been cause or victim. I attribute most of the anomalies to the single interface HDMI hub but cant exonerate the output device. After trying all the suggestions in the many threads and wasting lots of time with both Samsung and Apple support my Apple TV will now sleep under any power off scenarios including switching the source before TV power is turned off if you:
1. Turn off anynet- HDMI-CEC
2. Use HDMI 1 on the hub
3. Set Apple to TV to 4K SDR (not fair)
Note: When set back to 4K HDR problem immediately returns. But will sleep if you leave the TV on, source set to Apple TV and leave the apple TV on. Then in exactly 15 min. (or whatever the setting is) Both turn off.
Apple and Samsung will never ack they have an issue and working with them is hopeless. Its amazing how there are hundreds of replies to this exact issue yet apple support says there is nothing in their database and they never heard the issue before.
Hi jcalbano. Do you have an NAS server on your network? They sometimes scan for AirPlay devices. Also, apps like Plex, and some computer media players, scan for AirPlay clients.
Have you tried doing what I suggested in an earlier post - disabling the setting that allows your Samsung Smart Remote to control your Apple TV? That resolved the issue for me.
Hi mowquas. Have you tried disabling control of Apple TV by your Samsung remote, as already suggested at this link: Re: My Apple TV 4k is not sleeping..? It sounds like this may be a Samsung problem.
This bug is fixed in tvOS 11.4.1 To solve the problem update to that OS version.
richardfromfloral park - I think your post has led me to the fix! Thank you.
On my second ATV 4K unit, as that is what Apple Support figured may be the issue.
I too use Logitech Harmony, so I went in and added the ATV 4K as a new device, re-ran the activity and changed the ATV to the ATV 4K, and (and this may truly be what fixed it) edited the ATV 4k devise and under Power Settings, changed it the last option, something about the original remote not have a power button.
So far, that seems to have fixed the issue.
For the record, I had tried all the great suggestions on this thread, but none worked in my case. So it may be the Harmony settings that are the cause. Will update if this fix does not hold.
