I disabled the setting on my Samsung TV that allows the Samsung Smart Remote to control Apple TV. If you have a newer Samsung TV, you press the home button on the remote, select Source, select Universal Remote, then disable the remote from controlling Apple TV. Once I did this, Apple TV stays in sleep mode. I think it must be something with the universal remote sending a signal to Apple TV causing it to wake up.

This is happening to me too. I have the 11.1 beta update. Could that be the cause? It is hooked up to a Samsung JS8500 SUHD TV. I am also using the Harmony Elite universal remote to power everything down. I had done this before with no problems. The ATV doesn’t turn off/sleep when turning off with the Harmony remote, but it would still sleep after 15 minutes when everything was off. Now everything turns off but the ATV never sleeps. I have reboot d it several times. I have unplugged it for 10 minutes. Still having the same problem. I would prefer not to have to put it in sleep mode with the ATV remote separately from using my Harmony remote to turn off everything else (TV and sound bar).

My AppleTV 4K is connected to a Denon Receiver, which is connected to a Sony X900E TV and HDMI CEC settings are turned off. When I first set up the AppleTV 4K, it wouldn’t sleep. Apple phone support suggested I reset it and start from scratch, which seemed to fix the issue for one day and from the next day on, AppleTV 4K was sleeping after 4-8 hours although it has been set to sleep after 15 minutes. Then came TVOS 11.2 and now AppleTV 4K sleeps after 24-36 hours, and sometimes never. Has been fully reset twice to no avail. Customer support’s recommendation is to bring it into the store for service.

When the AppleTV 4K is not sleeping for prolonged periods, the screensaver is being displayed. Setting it manually to sleep works just fine and when it sleeps, it stays asleep until the remote is used to wake it up again.

My older AppleTV 4 is in a different room, connected to a Sony HTIB, which is connected to an LG LM7600 TV and on the same home network but has no such issues whatsoever.

Both Apple TVs are on wired ethernet connections and there is an NAS on the network as well. Other than display settings, most other settings are identical between the AppleTV 4K and AppleTV 4 and both are running TV OS 11.2 right now.

If it is being suggested on this message board that the NAS could be keeping the AppleTV 4K from sleeping, why is it not affecting the AppleTV 4?

If I try to put my Apple TV 4K to sleep manually (through settings or by pressing down the home/TV button on the remote), the TV (Samsung) goes to sleep and the status light on the ATV turns off, but about 5 seconds later the status light turns on and stays on. TV still remains in sleep mode. I have a direct connection from ATV to television - no receiver involved. Have tried swapping out the HDMI cord, turning off the HDMI-CEC functionality on TV and turning off, restarting ATV, but nothing seems to work. Status light always turns back on after manually putting it to sleep. Is this happening to anyone else?

Well you may be onto something here because I didn't realize my remote was controlling my Apple TV, which it definitely is. However, I can't find in the settings where you remove the Apple TV as a controllably device. When I go into the universal remote settings, all I see in there is my cable provider as the existing set top box. There is no Apple TV, or any other set top box to delete.

I’m ready to give up trying to get my 4K ATV to sleep, so what is worst case scenario by it staying on 24/7? Shorter life of the product? If that’s the case, I’d opt for an extended warranty and switch it out every few years..and I doubt it uses much electric being left on.

Given the time I’ve put in trying to solve this issue, I wish Apple had just done an off/on switch as others have said—problem solved. Thank you.

Well, the "fix" was short lived. The ATV 4K is back to staying on and not going into sleep mode.

Yes, the energy consumption is small, and there may indeed be a no issue with overheating, but what bothers me is that sometimes it will just not respond and I have to re-boot is by unplugging the power. Reminds me of the days I used a Windows PC...

In the same boat here. Apple 4K, Samsung UN55 JS7000, and Logitech Harmony remote.

I think I have tried everything in this thread, including:

- Turning off HDMI-CEC (on Samsung and Apple TV)

- Trying a different HDMI input on the TV (back and forth between the DVI/STB connection)

Interesting observation:

- If I unplug the HDMI cable from the TV and then reinstall, the Apple TV will sleep after 15 minutes, but then it won't go back to sleep after I use the Apple TV again.

My conclusion is the Samsung TV is sending some type of signal to the Apple TV keeping it awake.

One question, has anyone gotten to the "Universal Remote" settings on a Samsung JS7000? Only thing I haven't tried from this thread because I can't find those settings.

Resetting the modem had no effect.

Almost convinced that no controller do anything to the ATV. My Harmony doesn't have a ATV 4K device. Using the ATV 4K controller I manually put it to sleep, wait for a back screen then shut down the TV and amplifier units. The only thing the ATV 4k can listen to (while sleeping) in the Ethernet . This procedure appears to keep ATV 4K sleeping fo awhile, then the green light come on. So what on the Eathernet make it awake?
