High Sierra & printing PDF with Preview = problem

The problem arises through a combination of Xerox Driver 4.8.0(1912) with McOSX 13.0 (High Sierra). It is related to the programme being used to print (e.g. Preview printing a PDF), and it appears that the underlying problem is that the cups directory gets filled with files that cannot be dealt with, directory is /private/var/spool/cups). It can be solved by manually removing the files in this directory, which is not a realistic solution. The other solution is resetting the printing system with MacOSX and then reinstalling the printer, the latter solution not being very ideal either. So this has to be solved either by an OS upgrade or a driver upgrade. I hope you understand this is a serious flaw, it is not a user fault. I have no means of approaching apple or Xerox, but this is definitely something that has to be looked at by apple/Xerox. Further info: error message seen in printers queu: unable to handle AUTH_INFO_Required and FILTER_FAILED

A similar error emerged with Sierra but could not find a real solution to it.

Switching from SMB2/3 to 1 did not work for me, but the following did work:

sudo -s

Password:

bash-3.2# echo "[default]" >> /etc/nsmb.conf

bash-3.2# echo "signing_required=no" >> /etc/nsmb.conf

bash-3.2# exit

exit

When you use an SMB 2 or SMB 3 connection, packet signing is turned on by default. You might want to turn off packet signing if:

  • Performance decreases when you connect to a third-party server.
  • You can’t connect to a server that doesn’t support packet signing.
  • You can’t connect a third-party device to your macOS SMB server.

If you turn off packet signing, you lower the security of the SMB connection. Turn off packet signing only if both the client and server are on a secure network.

I followed the suggestion by TXHaflaire in

macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 - Finder issues when copying files in mounted shares | Discussion | Jamf Nation

As Admin in the terminal, I created a file /etc/nsmb.con, with following content:

[default]

protocol_vers_map=2

After a restart, SMB3 is not used anymore, only SMB2. I have not (yet) seen anymore "Unable to handle AUTH_INFO_REQUIRED” messages in the CUPS print queue, in http://localhost:631.

February 2018 -- we have the same problem too. Once the job log, pasted below, hits 500 it stops printing. I will be discussing with our Xerox network admin as well. I'll report back if we get anywhere. I would LOVE to know if anyone has uncovered a solution. We are later to the game in updating to the newer OS, and in this case, I am thankful for that.

We have this issue too at the university I work for. It involves Sierra and High Sierra. The symptoms are:

  • the print queue will state "filter failed";
  • the printer will pause;
  • upon trying to resume the printer, the queue will send numerous failed login attempts to the print server;
  • then the printer has to be removed from the setup and added again before it will work.

This is an issue that happens with some, but not all deployments. We replaced one computer for a client but the issue happens on the new computer (Sierra) as well. Every time we think we have a solution, it fails. The latest test is using LPD printing. We use Xerox printers with Papercut, but the Papercut client is not necessary on the computer since most users have only one account.

Thanks,
Luis

I thought as much, given that there seems to be an authentication error.

I use a printer connected in the same way at my workplace.

If there was a change of your password (IT here forces people to change passwords yearly), the problem can be that the old password remains in the keychain.

Open Keychain Access, and search for a password for that printer and delete it. Then try to print. It should ask your for a password this time, and hopefully print.

I have exactlythe same problem. Moreover, after reading your post, I now think the problem might be related to the printing environment at my university, because I suspect we work at the same university. I remember hearing from the IT service department that someone else at my university reported the problem I have, and it was described in exactly your words. So I take it you reported that problem at Utrecht University.

I've done quite a bit of searching online, and the only other report of this problem with 10.13 that I have found is yours. Makes me think this is likely UU-related and not just an Apple/Xerox issue.

Update: I looked at the problem with Mac specialist in the Beta faculty this evening and found out the following. Although 10.13 reports each print job to have stalled and logs authentication errors, the print job actually arrives at the Xerox printer server complete and ready for printing. I realized this when I logged on to the printer and noticed that it listed all of the print jobs that I had sent to the printer server in the past days. Each of them printed fine. So, it looks like 10.13 is either misreporting authentication errors, or is reporting errors that have been addressed via other means. At least in my case. Can you confirm that this situation holds for you too?

Hi guys,

I would like to chime in, this time from Aalborg University.

We seem to have exactly the same printing setup and similar printers.

I have also done a clean-install for the OS (twice by now), followed by an install of a Xerox wc7835 on the network with exactly the above described setup situation. But in my case, the problem always came back eventually after a couple of days.

Jan Willem, is your printing still working smoothly?

Hi everybody, I also updated to 10.13.1 and it worked for a while, but now I am back in exactly the same situation. What I noticed this time that the problems re-emerged with other problems. I am using multiple devices (2 Macs, iPad, iPhone) and sync everything through iCloud. It starts with my exchange account, they don't sync properly like they used to do, and my keychain items seem to get stuck locally in stead of being in the cloud. Is any of you working in a similar setup? since the printing problem has something to do with the authorisation, this might have something to do with the way passwords are stored with the whole iCloud thing. It confuses me and I consider this to be a bug is stead of my own specific problem. Wished apple is listening in into this discussion....

I have found (in a script) that every minute a check about the status of the printer is done (by the Xerox software ?). This request is not authorized so the check will stay in cups local printer queue.

For example:

Tue Dec 19 16:22:27 CET 2017

Tue Dec 19 16:23:28 CET 2017

Tue Dec 19 16:24:30 CET 2017

Tue Dec 19 16:25:32 CET 2017

Tue Dec 19 16:26:23 CET 2017

Tue Dec 19 16:27:25 CET 2017

Tue Dec 19 16:28:26 CET 2017

etc etc

After one hour you have 60 jobs and after one day 24*60=1440 jobs.

Question: how do we stop this status-check?
