No Dragon for Mac nor Enhanced Dictation

After "upgrading" to High Sierra I found that both Dragon for Mac (6) and Enhanced Dictation had ceased to function properly. As a disabled user, dependent on speech to text to use and control my computer, I strongly prefer Dragon for Mac – its feature set is considerably richer than that of OS X's Enhanced Dictation. I could survive using Enhanced Dictation, but after upgrading to 10.13 I found even that was no longer properly functioned, regardless of what microphone I used or whether or not Dragon had been loaded into the system. Has anyone had similar experiences with enhanced dictation or any suggestions? I've temporarily solve the problem by reverting to 10.12

I use an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) within i7 processor and 32 GB of RAM, 1 TB SSD primary drive and 12 TB of external drives. As this machine is reaching its performance limits, I was sincerely hoping to upgrade to the new Mac Pro after it becomes available, but I have to solve this problem first or will eventually have to consider the complexities of a multi-Mac ethernet set up in my studio, or changing to another platform. I've a huge investment in music software (I'm a composer) and have happily used Mac's since the 80's – my first Apple was a Mac 512 K, so such a decision would be very painful. But, I can't afford to be stuck permanently at OS X 10.11.

I just received this reply from their tech here in the UK.

Thank you for contacting Nuance Technical Support.

Thank you for the information you provided.

After checking the Office version you have, I spoke with my supervisor. He told me that Dragon it is not compatible with the Office version you have.

That is why Dragon cannot work properly in Word. I would recommend you to update your Office version to 2011 or 2013.

Or you can use another program to dictate and then copy and paste it on Word

If this is true, should make it clear advertisements. As upgrading is likely to cost a packet! However, I don't really believe this. Is anyone working with Office version 2011 or 2013? Finally, he doesn't take on the issue of it not working in Pages, which I asked him about. My feeling is that they are ducking and diving on this one. Very unsatisfactory to say the least.

I too am severely physically disabled and rely upon my Dragon Dictate for virtually all my communications, and only occasionally use an on-screen keyboard when I have trouble breathing enough to make my voice suitable for dictation. This is a very slow and laborious way of doing things. I know that Apple are going to suggest that it's not their problem, it is Nuance and their duty to ensure that there is sufficiently secure et cetera to work with High Sierra. In the meanwhile, I am left with either trying to use a very rubbishy Apple dictation, or am now having to hunt for other email client so that I can actually write emails in again. I really am quite angry, and will probably have to call support to work out how I can rollback without having to use a data backup, as that would be equally as laborious and annoying.

I thought it was only Microsoft who pulled this kind of stunt, and am really quite upset with Apple, with whom I have been a loyal customer, and have argued against their expense citing the quality of their product as the offset, although I am really not in a position to be able to afford their product that easily. Now I just feel duped. Gutted, and am having to write this on a simple text file so that I can copy and paste it over to the window of my Firefox browser – which has also decided to not support access controls. How marvellous, all the products I trusted have just suddenly turned their back on their support for us very large, but apparently, minority.

This also happened to me after the High Sierra update. Reinstall does not work.

I've spent way too many hours finding a workaround, and as far as I know, all of the suggestions do not work.

Accessibility, including Dictation is essential for those of us that are differently abled. It's a very reasonable accommodation, and for Apple to completely ignore this problem is completely inhumane. 😮

How can we get Apple to take accessibility seriously? Any ideas?

Thanks,

C.

Nuance fail to respond to anything, other than shutting down their user forums because of all the complaints! One of the worst companies around, only interested in selling more software not fixing any problems. It is sad that they are the only option especially when so many disabled users rely upon them. Good luck with your refund, let us know if you get it or if they indicate when a fully operational version will be released.

Great! Text edit works a treat. But it was working with Word and Pages before I ungraded to Sierra, so it should work them, as well as Mail. I will try new profile later but don't hold much hope as I can't see it helping with other commands. I'll just have for Nuance to admit the **** thing doesn't work with High Sierra and fix it. Thanks very much.

Yes, for some reason Dragon has worked for me in Safari almost always. I haven’t tried Chrome before but it doesn’t seem to work in Firefox. It’s just quirky I guess. I am lucky enough to have partial arm and wrist movement and am able to copy and paste that way.

Getting this Dragon software to work correctly should be a very high priority for them. Especially considering how much it cost!
