Carplay, Apple Maps and Waze

Just bought a Mercedes GLA with AppleCarplay.

I was so excited to at last plug my Iphone to run my favorite apps on my dashboard. My enthousiasm melt like a bucket of icecream trowed in a supernova when carplay forced me to use Apple Maps for navigation (and didn't let me look at my agenda but this is another story).

I took a deep breath and tought to myself "Surely, Apple Maps can't be as bad". But after two weeks of giving Apple Maps a chance : I'm sorry, it really really is far away from Waze or google maps. I had to get back to my stupid Iphone holder suck to my window (wich was the reason I moved to carplay and changed my car)

It is so important to me that I must say goodbye to 10+years with Iphone and switch to Android.

Dear Apple, I'm sure I'm not alone. Let me use Waze or at least Google Maps. Of fix Apple Maps but I don't think that could work.

Will you do something about this fast? (Like before Pixel 2 is out in two days and I fell I will be rushing to it)

Warm regards

(Since english is not my primary language please appologize for)

I, too, am a disgruntled but loyal Apple fan, who has bought a car and had that massive deflating moment upon plugging in my iPhone.

Apple is preventing submission of third party navigation apps on CarPlay. Their Developer guidelines clearly state that third-party CarPlay submissions can only be used for audio apps, "automaker" apps, messaging apps, or Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) apps. Waze does not fit into any of these categories because it is a navigation app.

If you want to help convince Apple to change this policy, please sign up for a free Apple Developer Account and file a bug report with Apple and explain why they need to allow navigation apps on CarPlay. They will take a few weeks to assess your bug report, and then file it as closed, but mark it as a duplicate of an existing bug report. To help Apple staff do this, mention rdar://22830071 in your submission. This is the mechanism that is roughly equivalent of "upvoting" a feature request. If enough developers do this, the original bug report will have so many requests they will be compelled not to ignore it.

Once Apple have opened CarPlay to navigation apps, Waze will definately enter the market, since they've already done so for Android Auto.

Please help spread the word by passing these instructions around, especially to software developers.

Apple reads all messages sent to feedback but they rarely (if ever) will reply.

Apple's market share in Brazil has not decreased 50% in two years. Here is some market share information from the last two years in Brazil:

  • January 2016 - 11.31%
  • June 2016 - 11.78%
  • January 2017 - 11.85%
  • June 2017 - 10.51%
  • December 2017 - 9.68%

Overall their market share has fallen less than 2% and their individual share decrease is 14.4% over the last two years. One thing I noticed was that the market share always tends to fall around August and September with the anticipation of a new iPhone being released. This year it went up in October and November but then fell again in December. This could have had to do with the limited stock of the iPhone X and my guess is that it will show an increase again in January 2018.

People, I have to tell you - I have Waze running actually ON CarPlay! 100% no Jailbreak needed. I drive a 2015 Skoda Octavia with the Amundsen Infotainment system, with CarPlay integration. To get it working, I bought a dashboard magnetic mount kit and fitted the magnet half on top of the touchscreen in my dash, and placed the metallic half on the back of my iPhone.

Congrats on the Mercedes GLA. I have a '16 Toyota that uses Scout as a navigator through your phone. Not very pleased with it, as it only has turn by turn instructions which seem to be fairy accurate. As for Apple maps, a new local major road that opened several months ago is not updated - but is updated in Waze and Google maps. It seems like the Apple maps is an app on the back burner. Google and Waze are so much better! Almost want to go out and buy a pixel 2 as an upgrade to my iPhone 6. I also join in the consensus so far that Apple should invest in their map app or use a 3rd party.

What made you give this answer? I've been searching the web, on both apple and waze user and support forums. I have concluded that in fact is apple's fault. Waze would very much like to be allowed to deliver a apple carplay version of their navigation app but has not yet been admitted.

I have the exact same sentiment as Merlin1166

I bought a new car that has no navigation of it's own, it is depending on either carplay or android auto for that. I am a first generation iPhone user currently in the market for an Android phone just because of my frustration with apple maps (not finding any company's address and plainly not being able to find me the shortest route ever - in The Netherlands that is) and to a smaller extend with the limited amount of (third party) apps on carplay.
