I was able to solve the problem on both my iPhone X and iPad. The error was being generate by my Exchange account. I went to Settings->Accounts & Passwords->[exchange account] . I then switched off the calendar, chose to delete it from my phone, and finally switched it back on. No problems since on either device.

ok....i think i finally fixed it....
1) Accounts & Passwords
2) go to each email account and turn off the calendar (Delete from my iPhone) will not delete so accept that requirement
3) Repeat for each email account you have on the phone.
4) Turn off phone and then turn on.
5) Return to step 2 and turn on all the calendars.
6) Calendar servers will update ( I did not lose any appointments in the past, present or future)
7) I tested from various calendars
8) Error message has not returned.
Why don't the Apple Help Desk People know this.
Get help using iCloud Contacts, Calendars, or Reminders - Apple Support
Turn off iCloud Contacts, Calendar, or Reminders and turn it back on
- Tap Settings > [your name] > iCloud. (If you're using iOS 10.2 or earlier, go to Settings > iCloud.)
- Slide to turn off Contacts, Calendars, and Reminders.
- If you see your calendars or reminders on iCloud.com or any of your devices, you can choose Delete from My [device]. If not, choose Keep on My [device].
- Wait a few minutes, then turn on Contacts, Calendar, or Reminders again.

Steps to follow:
1. Settings>Accounts & Password
2. Select the account you believe is the problem and turn off its calendar. Repeat, if needed, with others
3. Turn off your phone
4. Turn on your phone
5. Turn your calendar/s back on - It will take 20-40 min to recover but you will not lose anything in ur calendar
Hope it works!
Thanks,
Regards,

Hi, I saw this post and although old I just thought i’d reply as I managed to fix this error as described.
If you go to settings and then accounts & passwords then select the email account that you think the calendar invite is originating from you can toggle whether calendar / mail / notes etc is on or off for that account . I turned all the toggles off for the account with the issue and then turned my phone off and back on and then went back to the settings and then accounts and passwords and then the email email and turned it all back on. This has cleared the error and no annoying pop up comes up now!
Thanks for the help and hope this description helps others too.
Mine wasn’t iCloud or all of exchange. I followed someone’s directions of unchecking calendar under my exchange account, deleting them from phone, and checking it again. Took a while for them to show up but they did (without that frustrating error). Obviously this was an unintended consequence of an apple upgrade. I’ve always thought that apple testing was better than that. I guess I’ll wait a while for upgrades going forward.
It seemed to be related to my Exchange account, and since I use that for work, I did not want to delete the calendar. So I deleted the account and then reinserted it. It seems to be working fine, now.
Removed your transfer account and then added it again, It fixed all your problems! Run on iOS 11.2 on iPhone 6s. It took me only a few minutes to fix the obstacle. *****

Bingo! It was Exchange. Calendar turned off and later when I turned it back on it all came back. Thx.
I can't turn off reminders etc without deleting the whole calendar and I am worried I will lose everything? I don't have the option of delete or keep on my phone?
Aslo it is not the icloud calendar that is the problem it is syncing with my work calendar that is the problem.
Every time I do a software upgrade there is a problem, this is the latest one, it is mind numbingly frustrating!
It keeps popping up while I'm driving if I;m using the satnav - which is really dangerous as I have to press ok to get rid of it - countless times!!!
Trying to connect via chat - but I have been waiting half an hour (waiting time- 2 minutes my foot!)
aargh!
The only way I was able to get rid of this was to erase all of the contents on my iPhone 8 and reinstall everything again! Now I have a new iPhone XS Max and guess what error popped up again! Apple, please get this resolved, I'm not getting any younger and having to fix your issues is taking far more time than I have to waste!
Exactly what the issue was, Exchange. Had recently changed my pw on company network then the next thing you know this pop up error kept showing. It wasn't until I took these steps that it went away. Original instructions by Apple above did not work.
Phone: 7
iOS: 12.1.2
I am having the same issue which started with iOS 11. Incredibly frustrating and dangerous when you are navigating using your phone. Nothing I have tried works. I’m to the point that I will just delete the **** calendar off my phone. Apple, please fix this ASAP!
I have the iPhone X and this did not work for me. Everything was working fine until I downloaded OS 11.1.2 that was supposed to fix a bunch of bugs, and now I've got this issue! It keeps popping up every 5 seconds, and this is my primary work phone. *****!!!
I am also getting the same “Calendar Invitation” Error. SUPER ANNOYING! :-( NOT HAPPY. Also started since I updated the version to iOs 11.1. In my experience also slowed down the phone significantly and causes crashes and early auto-switch-offs at low-battery % levels (eg at 20%), but more frustrating is that the battery life is now much shorter and the phone cannot even last half a day anymore...
Still getting the issues after removing and deleting iCloud calender, contacts and reminders and restarting the device since removal.
Error Just seems to recur when activating the iCloud Calendar again???
Apple must please fix this.
