iPhone 8 Plus Screen Auto Dimming

I purchased the new iPhone 8 Plus 256gb Gold and noticed that even with Auto-Brightness, Night Mode, True Tone and other relevant display settings turned off, that the screen was auto dimming whilst actively using the phone in different environments and light. I tried changing my auto lock setting to see if this helped but it did not. I even removed my tempered glass screen protector think it may be affecting the screen brightness, but this failed to resolve the issue. The iphone was restored twice but still no luck. I also noticed that upon restarting the phone the screen brightness would default to 0% and I would have to try and view the dim screen to access Control Centre to turn my brightness up again (frustrating and tedious). My iPhone 8 Plus was replaced and now I have my second iPhone 8 Plus doing exactly the same! I have even set this new iphone up as a new device to ensure that no issues/bugs were transferred from my back-up. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced these issues with the new iPhone 8 Plus or 8 as there is limited information reported online about this issue? I would be interested to hear from people as Apple have not had any reports of it either so are trying to ascertain what is going on. At present, I am just monitoring my iPhone and when this "dimming' issues occurs again I have to try and screen record it so Apple can see. Thanks 🙂

They hid the AUTO BRIGHTNESS. It’s in Settings/general/accessibility/display accommodations/scroll down to auto-brightness and turn off

Hey,

I’ve been having a similar issue. My brightness would stay below 50% even when I knew it was at 100%. For the moment being I managed to bring the brightness back up by going to: settings>General>accessibility > zoom> switch the “zoom” to “off” and

User uploaded file change “zoom filter” to “none”.

It made the screen brighter for now. Although, i still need to monitor it for the shift of color/brightness in the future...

I spoke with AppleCare via Chat and then on the phone. They said it was a hardware issue then sent me to the Genius Bar in a store. The Genius Bar replaces my phone. I do notice that my phone doesn’t get as warm when using just Waze and Music streaming with 11.2.6 as it did with the IOS 11.3 beta and I think I have only possibly noticed it dim slightly on its own once but I haven’t been able to replicate t. It’s worked fine since they have replaced it other than that once. So maybe it is a hardware thing or maybe 11.3 beta borked my old phone.

I bought an iPhone 8 Plus 256GB when it first came out. I didn’t have a dimming problem until I got a case for it. Now it dims whenever it gets too “warm”. The ONLY a thing that works is to turn it off completely and either let it cool naturally or help it a little if you’re in a hurry. The be put it in my freezer a few times and that REALLY speeds up the cooling. Once it’s cool, it’s back to REAL 100% brightness! I’m HOPING that when iOS12 is released, this irritating problem will be fixed. If not, my next phone will NOT be an iPhone and I’ve had iPhones since the iPhone 3+! My wife had Androids and they were terrible for her to figure out. I’ll have to check out the new ones before switching but SOMEONE has to make a phone that doesn’t constantly drive you up a wall!!!

I have done all that with reps e.g.: changing settings (auto-brightness, true tone, reduce white point, display accommodations, nightshift), reset iPhone, set up as new phone, reinstalled back-up etc etc and even done sysdiagnostics on two handsets and set video and logs to Apple. Apple have stated that "Its not normal iPhone behaviour" so are now replacing my second handset. Its so frustrating. If you search these forums you will see that the issue is starting to pop up a fair bit....even google it and its on other forums in MacRumours and iMore, iDrop etc.

This is happening to me. It is definitely related to temperature. I have turned off *all* display settings that could be affecting it including the auto brightness that is buried in accessibility settings. While driving and using Waze and Music at the same time my phone tends to get warm and even though my brightness is set to 100% my screen will dim automatically within a few minutes of driving it’s gradual but it ends up at like 50-75% and it makes it really difficult to see in the daylight. I am going to chat with support about this today.

I’ve had the same issue since updating my old iPhone 6 with iOS 11. I’ve researched it pretty extensively and basically, it’s Apples way of protecting the phone when it is under high usage, use while charging or the temperature of the casing rises to a certain level. There is no fix for it as it is a software code but hopefully if enough people let them know that we don’t like the feature then possibly they might provide an update removing it. But currently, that is the only thing that will fix it.

I have the same situation with iphone 8 on the latest iOS. Auto brightness turned off, True tone could be off or on (doesn’t matter). So, brightness could by itself suddenly switch to 75% or lower, to 50%, however brightness setting set to max. It happens while gaming or watching youtube etc. Brightness switch from 75% to 100%, for example, doesn’t increase brightness, it stuck on 75%.

I have had such issue with my 6s and the problem was in certain iOS version, Apple released it last year for 6s to fix suddenly turn off issue (my iphone 6s was eligible for free battery replacement due to this) and there was a dependency with battery %. At 75% battery screen dims to 75% brightness, at 50% to 50% and so on.

Just now, writing this comment my iphone 8 was at approximately 75% max brightness and I couldn’t set it to 100%, it also was connected to the power from 60% battery, at the end of the comment iphone increased brightness to 100% 2 times and came back to normal, battery charged to 73%.

Considering this situation I can assume that this is iOS issue and made to prevent from overheating. I don’t like such approach, instead of doing everything well, Apple trying to fiz the problems in a strange ways. Dissapointed.

I contacted Apple Support tonught, I'm having the same issue. I was given this response:Thank you. Upon researching this, I have found that this is something our engineering team has received reports of that is actually currently under investigation. At this time we advise to keep your iPhone updated as the fix will typically come in the form of an update. Thank you so much for chatting in and reporting this. I am forwarding this onto our engineering team to increase impact of the issue.

Hi,

I am having the exact same problem while on the PUBG Mobile app. I have actually contacted Apple regarding this issue and they replied saying that it is a problem with the app rather than the iPhone; and asked me to contact PUBG's customer service.

So I contacted PUBG's customer service and they sent me a list of instructions to follow. To click on 'Repair' on the upper right screen of the homepage (the connect page i.e. to FB, twitter, game center). Unfortunately, that did not solve my problem as well.

Hopefully, Apple/PUBG mobile will rectify this issue soon cuz it ***** having to play with a dim screen in PUBG.

Thanks.
