iOS 11.x Cellular Data usage

Hello,

I'm currently using iOS 11.0.3, and am still having issues with turning on/off Cellular data, and concerns over the amount of data being used by System Services which I have supposedly turned off - such as Siri.

The Cellular data toggle in this version of iOS doesn't respond for a few seconds (so you can press it, nothing happens, so you press it again, and then it looks as if nothing has happened). I suspect the issue rests with the updating of the icons for the apps using cellular data below the toggle.... (just a thought)

More concerning, as this one impacts the cost of my Cellular Providers data usage plan. Over the space 30 minutes away from WiFi :

Time & Location - 2.3 MB

DNS Services - 1.6 MB

iTunes Accounts - 1.5 MB

Push Notifications - 751 KB

Mapping Services - 487 KB

Documents & Sync - 304 KB

General - 175 KB

Messaging Services 112 KB

Siri 97.7 KB

iTunes Media Services 93.9 KB

Cellular Services 55.8 KB

Game Center 42.9 KB

Software Updates 36.1 KB

Diagnostics 23.3 KB

Accessibility 6.7 KB

Networking 0.2 KB

This is over the space of 30 minutes.

I have Location Services enabled, so I guess that accounts for Time & Location - but 2.3 MB ?

iTunes Accounts & iTunes Media Services - as far as I know, I use neither upon my phone. (I have "use Cellular Data" switched off under iTunes & App Stores.

Siri - I have that apparently switched off, so why is it active ?

Game Center - I wasn't playing any games - so what's it doing ?

Documents & Sync ? I guess this is iCloud - but I've got no updates to sync, and I was apparently only using Notes for iCloud, but now see "Game Center" and "Find My iPhone" as setup to use iCloud.

So over such a short space of time, it seems to me that this version of iOS is in overdrive sending data to & fro to Apple... why and how can I stop it ?

I've noticed one thing that would be interesting to know if others have seen the same issue.

After my screen locks/darkens, when I press the home key to reignite the display, I sometimes notice a message about Mobile Data not being switched on for apps - such as Mail, or Chrome. (I have Background App Refresh switched off)

Similarly, at the same time, I also, from time to time see that the WiFi symbol isnt initially shown at the top of the display, but instead I do see 4G being shown (momentarily) before the WiFi symbol reappears.

Could it be, that when in Screen power off mode, WiFi is disabled ? Which may account why System apps continue to slurp Mobile data even though you had WiFi enabled prior the screen been powered off ?

I merely questioned the "advice", since it seems like a standard thing to say if you don't know the cause, or if you just wanted to catch out someone out and see if they blindly followed advice without knowing what it did.

If there is no other better solution, then a factory reset followed by restore, may sadly be the only option - though has anyone had the same issue, and followed the same steps with success ? I guess, if no one else replies, (within a day or so), then that is something I will need to do, before heading off to the local Apple store.

Even if someone else reports the same symptoms, it can be very difficult to say if the cause is the same. That's why beginning troubleshooting steps tend to be rather generic. Very often, they are being used to rule out problems. So, if you reset your settings and the problem is not resolved, we now know that it was not a problem with any of your settings. It could be for some people, though. Updates can monkey with settings, something I find very annoying.

The steps that welafever is outlining are exactly the ones that Apple will do if you take the phone to them.

As an example, I use my home WiFi whilst at home, however even though I have 100% WiFi strength, when launching an application I saw a prompt informing me that Cellular data was switched off for that app. Turning off all cellular data and relaunching the same application didn't produce the error. This is particularly concerning. I have WiFi Assist switched off - so why would there even be an attempt to use Mobile data ?

It looks like by default, iOS 11.x is using "small" amounts of Mobile data, even when connected to WiFi. Why ?

Same problem, except I feel like MUCH more extreme. I have around 3 GB a month on my plan I think. And random apple like calendar or contacts which I literally NEVER open used like over 1 GB in the month! So I turned cellular off for every app and setting I could find besides the select few apps I actually use data for. This helped with the aspect, but my system services is just rediculous. Most of the categories look reasonable and are fine by me, like messaging, but the top two go as follows (10 days into the month after resetting statistics):

Documents and Sync: 596 MB (more than 0.5 GB!!)

iTunes Accounts: 113 MB

Total, this is close to 3/4 of a gigabyte, which is very concerned because if you multiply that by three to account for a whole month that is 2.25 GB of data used for supposedly nothing so pretty much I only get to use that other 25%. Not really okay if you ask me. Also is this an apple issue or something I need to talk to my carrier about? Bc no matter what I try on my own I can’t fix his issue.

welafever, the problem is that you answer offered no explanation other than just tell him to do something. Your method instructs the OP to reset his settings and this is why he has such concern. Perhaps if the solution comes with an explanation would help ease his mind. You may consider yourself an expert and expect everyone to be at your level. However, this type of attitude is also very off putting. OP comes here for help because he may have exhausted his own options but for sure, the one option that you provided could cause more harm to him and he foresees that. This kind of smarty pants attitude should be avoided.

This is a user-to-user support forum. People give the best answer they can. If you think you can provide a better one to this question, I'm sure it would be appreciated.

Hello Idris,

It does appear that I am not alone in having this issue.

I've carried out all the suggestions, just as others have also been presumably doing, yet the same issue persists. Cellular data is being used when it shouldn't be, and indeed following the iOS 11.x update, more so than before.

What's troubling is that, rather than being just another inconvenience relating to speed, it's a bug, that's actually costing me money.

Given that I am not alone in experiencing this, how do we promote this matter to the attention of Apple, so that they can, and do, look into, and address it ?

Has there been any resolution to this? I don’t like updating my phone at every update, but I have been just because I’m really disgusted by this bug that just starts sucking up data. I’m currently on 11.2.2 with an 8 plus. I first noticed it on my 7 plus. Prior to that I had an SE, that didn’t have any issues. All of them were on iOS 11 and up. It was first brought to my attention when my data surpassed my monthly plan, by a lot. Then I started to pay attention to the data communication icon in the top left and monitor my cellular usage. When I’m on WiFi the icon will still be active, but I can’t see exactly what kind of activity there is while on WiFi. And the only way I can get it to stop is shutting down my phone or doing a hard reset. Like tonight, I reset all of my cellular stats and closed out all of my apps (double tapping the home button and swiping up).

And I left my phone alone on my stand. Here are a few screen shotsUser uploaded fileUser uploaded filei didn’t touch my phone and my apps were closed. All of them.

During the times I’ve been noticing all of the things using data. I think the “Settings” app using data is really peculiar. I don’t have any screen shots of that because I thought I resolved the data problem when I shut that off. It was using a lot. But my calendar, mail, and mapping were using data while it was just sitting on my stand. User uploaded fileUser uploaded file
