iOS 11 Dock Floating Problems On iPad Air 2

I upgraded my iPad Air 2 and now my dock seems to float from side to side or up or down depending if I’m in landscape or portrait, see below. Is there a fix for this or is it a known problem that is going to be addressed in a version upgrade? I have not been able to find any documentation on this issue & I can’t believe I’m the only one having this problem.

Thanks,

Jim...

This was my initial best guess after some trial and error.

I contacted the game maker in question and basically got an FU it isn’t us.

However after uninstalling their game... ahem.... My Singing Monsters... haven’t had the problem since.

I didn’t even blame them, I suggested it was just as likely their ad server or server provider but nope.

I've been dealing with this issue as well since iOS 11 update and I agree, Apple's response of the "reboot" is far from an acceptable solution.

Just adding a little information to those that went down the in-game ads track - I was doing some scouring of the inter-webs the past week to see if I could find some semblance of hope to correct this as it is the most annoying of issues. Some other folks have narrowed it down to not specifically in-game ads per-se but anything that changes the resolution of the screen (most of the time this is in-game ads). So, while uninstalling and removing said culprit apps would "fix" the problem - Apple, you approved them to be in your ever so "prestigious" store. This requires a fix and sooner rather than later. It's unacceptable and quite frankly ridiculous that something like this made it through your QA.

Thanks so much for posting this! Yes ever since I upgrade I have the issue too and I now have to search for my mail icon, search for chrome and so on because I have no bar. Those idiots that say restarting the machine FIXES the issue evidently have no clue what the word Fix means. Yes sure restarting temporarily makes the bar show up for a few minutes but, as soon as you go into an app or map or whatever and then come back to the homepage the bar is gone again or floating somewhere off the screen...that’s not a fix...heck it isn’t even a workaround, I’m not going to restart my iPad every time I use something on my tablet. A workaround is to go to search and type in what you need and the app will popup or you can ask Siri and she’ll brink it up too.

I went to Best Buy and tried the same action on a 12.5” pro and it does the exact same thing; the bar is an issue. However the bar works fine on my iPhone 8. So it appears it is a bug for iPads in general.

Again, running iOS 11.2.2 on an iPad Air 2, model MGKL2LL/A. I went to test the “game ad” theroy on my device. I went into Crossy Road (wide orientation), watched an ad then exited the game to return to the home screen. My dock was gone. My device demonstrated the same exact behavior as shown in my previous post when I rotated my device in 90 degree increments. Resetting the device cleared the problem.

I was having this problem and I think I just got it fixed. I read where the support people kept suggesting to turn off the iPad and turn it back on. I'd done that to no avail. I tried a hard reset (hold home button and off button at the same time until it turns off). I believe that the hard reset fixed my problem. Hopefully, it's will help you and others, too.

When people say "reset" an iPad I hope you are not doing the two button "force restart." This is holding down power button and home button simultaneously until the iPad restarts. This is not the preferred way to "restart" an iPad - it is intended for when the iPad is frozen or locked up. It is somewhat more risky as it is akin to just pulling out the power plug on a desktop computer - it potentially can cause problems to the OS or apps. The best way to "restart" an iPad is to just power it off by holding down the power button until you get the "Slide to power off" message. This method correctly shuts down running apps and the OS before turning off the machine. With my wife's iPad Pro this works just fine at getting the dock to stop misbehaving - for a while. Repeatedly doing a force restart by holding down the two buttons is increasing your chances of something going wrong - along with the dock issue. Note that these steps vary among the different iPhones, but seem to be the same on all iPads.

Hi guys, I think that the problem comes from iOS because whatever the app you run, the dock disappears if you change the orientation before the screen is stabilize. I spent two weeks with no problem as long as I wait to see the display stable (I mean not calculating) before changing whether the orientation or passing to another app. Today I wasn’t taking care believing the problem was solved and it appeared again. So don’t speed up and wait enough, but it is not acceptable. Come on Apple !!!

P.S. I work with a iPad pro 10.5, don’t worry because you have an IPad 4 ... we are together in the same mess !

I think the problem should be avoided instead of cured by the reboot. In fact the dock does not

disappear, it moves under the visible display when you return too fast from landscape mode. The

dock is still available in portrait mode (well some part may be missing) or if you move the pad 180*.

An app used in lanscape mode can provoke the issue if you go back to the main screen swiping the app

not waiting to see the dock complete in the blurred screen. I do this way and I do not reboot so many often.

Can you confirm my theory ?

I agree that it is NOT acceptable for a so sophisticated and expensive device. So Apple...!!!??? 👹
