Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, derekfromcoleraine.
If I understand your post correctly, you have to manually press the Sleep/Wake button to lock your iPhone as it is not automatically locking. I'd like to help.
Let's take a look at the setting that can affect this feature. Tap Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and see which amount of time it is currently set to Auto-Lock after. If you have Low Power Mode enabled, Auto-Lock will be automatically set for 30 seconds. For more information about Low Power Mode, see this article:
Use Low Power Mode to extend battery life on your iPhone
Let us know if that resolves this issue for you.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Take care.
I reboot the iPhone and works for two days, will see if this fixed for good.
Thanks !!
You should only have to turn your phone off and back on. Still annoying but better than the full reset you are doing.
Yes, adjusting the timeout and restarting the phone worked for my wife's phone - however 2 weeks later it started doing it again. So I've repeated the process and it works - but this isn't a great solution.
Her previous phone on ios10 did not do this.
I wonder if restoring a backup to the new phone is a potential cause? But you should be able to restore a phone to preserve all your settings as that's why you buy an iPhone (for convenience)
Apple please investigate this - it's annoying.
Update --> if you have an apple watch!
When i get a missed call, the alert keeps on disappearing and reappearing on the iPhone display. This kept the display turned on.
However when i dismiss the alert on my apple watch, then alert disappears from my iPhone too. This seems to have solved my problem.
Perhaps (generally) the updates going between the iPhone and watch keep the iPhone display turned on?
Hope this helps :-)
Thank you for the reply, the only solution is reboot, my 8 plus is ok, never had this bug, but my wife's iphone 8 needs to be rebooted once every 2 weeks for this one. The phone won't go to sleep. the settings are ok, same on both phones.
I recently ran the latest iOS update, went in and changed my auto logout time, did a hard shutdown and ive had quite a few days without the issue. I’m going to do another hard shutdown and mark my calendar to see how long it works this time.
Interesting - for my wife’s phone I did the same, changed the lock time and applied the 11.1.1 update and it’s been 2 weeks now problem free (however it took a few weeks to reoccur before). Another week and I may be able to declare it solved.
PS to my post... I did a complete shut down and restart and that seemed to work.
My new iphone 8 has the same issue and I dont use an Apple Watch.
In my experience, a restart fixes the problem but only temporarily for a couple of weeks...
i am also facing the same problem, restarting the phone worked but this is not a permanent solution.with brand as big as apple the issue should be addressed by apple and should be solved in an update.
Agree.. this issue is not solved as 3 of my family’s 4 iPhone 8s have this issue.. Restsrting the phone temporarily fixes it for a few days but it keeps coming back... as others mentioned this is a huge deal for people with sensitive data on their phone.. I can legit get fired for leaving my phone unlocked
I also continue to have this problem - even after installing the 11.1.1 update. Every week or so I have to do to shutdown my phone and restart to get the auto-lock to work. I hope Apple is working on a solution to this because it seems a lot of us are being affected 😟
I have the same issue. A restart will temporarily fix the issue but it always returns, screen stays on indefinitely unless the lock button is pressed, no matter what the auto-lock feature is set to.
I'd be interested in whether after changing your wallpaper whether this re-occurs in 2 weeks time.
The phone I have going wrong in our family did have a wallpaper restored from a previous phone (no animation though) - so it may be worth trying to re-do the wallpaper just in case this resets something important. Certainly changing the lock time didn't make a difference.
I posted a completed bug report link earlier on the thread, possibly people can tag on more details to that potentially capturing the log files they want (more advanced but not too hard).
I discovered my wife’s iPhone 8 hasn’t been updated to 11.1.1 but had been running almost two weeks on the previous version with no failure (but it seemed to take 2 weeks for her to get the issue - so I’m not sure what usage pattern accelerates it).
It would be useful to confirm what iOS version people have when they report the problem here and confirm if everyone gets it with 11.1.1 and if they have tied adjusting their wallpaper and re-adjusted the timeout settings.
