Text messages disappear from lock screen

So after updating to iOS 11.0.3, I will hear a text message tone alert on my phone, I’ll go look at my phone (locked) and the text message isn’t there. I have to unlock my phone and go to text messages to see what the message was (super annoying). I thought that changing the notification setting from “temporary” to “persistent” would fix this, but unfortunately it didn’t. If they could fix this ASAP that would be awesome. :)

Hi Rmunso12,

I understand that you hear an alert for incoming messages, but don't see a notification for them on your Lock Screen. I'm happy to provide some help for this issue.

Use the steps in the following article to ensure that notifications for Messages are allowed on the Lock Screen:

Use notifications on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Change alert styles and settings for notifications

Customize your notifications with different alert styles so you can quickly act on emails, calendar invites, messages, and more.

To add or change an alert style for a notification, go to Settings > Notifications and select an app. Here are some alert styles that you can choose:

  • Allow Notifications: Turn on to get notifications from the app you selected.
  • Sounds: Have an app play a sound to alert you when you receive a notification.
  • Show on Lock Screen: Turn on to see notifications from the app on your Lock screen.
  • Show in History: See previous notifications from the app you select.
  • Banners: Choose how you want notifications to appear when your device is unlocked. Tap Temporary to have alerts appear on the screen and then go away. Or tap Persistent to have alerts stay on the screen until you act on it.
  • Show Previews: Choose what you want to see when you get a notification, like a text message.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Cheers!

Also having this problem ever since upgrading to the most recent IOS update. Also, messages seem to get delivered to my phone erratically. i.e., I walked into my work and received 4 texts from different people that were up to 5 minutes old. All of my settings have remained the same so it's not like i have it set to only work on wifi.

Apple is dropping the ball, HARD! every update they release to fix issues from their last one seems to incite new problems. My IPhone 6+ has become extremely unreliable and it's now a pain in the butt to use the most simple, native functions on the phone. Apple needs to pull their hear out of their rears and get this crap straightened out! and no, the answer that the Apple Store gave me of " have you considered a new phone?" Dont even!

Ok rant over.. any help would be appreciated considering the community is more helpful that Apple itself.

**** that’s messed up. I’m having the same exact problem and missing messages from my work for start times and even late messages where the boss had already replied coming through late. I’ve given Apple a few months to fix this problem since it started with the ios11 update but since it still remains and is seriously frustrating I’ll be powering up my new Samsung S8 tomorrow.

Yeh no way I would restore to new phone. Imagine how long that would take to get everything back to how you want it and this ridiculous problem just starts happening again.

I

have a Samsung S8 now and everything’s been mirrored across so I’m good to go all that’s left is swap the simcard over. Basically ios11 has been a huge failure.. the phone was laggy for months and the Bluetooth connectivity among other things left a lot to be desired. I’ve given Apple enough of my time and money so I’ll give the s8 a go and see if I can live with the different OS.

I have been having this issue on my iPhone 5S running on iOS 11 too. Have recently upgraded to iPhone 7Plus for larger screen and the 5 was running slow and I was getting annoyed with the text message notifications not showing up. Had the new 7 Plus for about 3 weeks and the problem has come to this phone now too! Very annoying! Please fix Apple!

So was the ip7 message notifications working fine for the first few weeks? Did you add any new apps to the phone leading up to the issue returning? And was it always operating on ios11.3? Quite oddly I’ve found my native/Apple email app notifications don’t stay in history beyond a day. So it seems that the broken notification issue goes beyond just instantly deleting my messages. Certainly the last Apple product I will be buying while this issue exists.

I’m having the same problem. I’ve already gone to Apple support (over 30 mins. on the phone). The fix after a reset only worked until I chose to have a passcore again. Then the problem came right back. I receive a sound and know there’s a text message. I put in my passcode to open the phone and the text message disappears.

I’ve also encountered problems with missed messages.

Why doesn’t Apple respond with some helpful advice that works or states that it can’t fix the problem? Your products continue to go downhill with each new software system upgrade. I have an ipad that doesn’t connect to iCloud and doesn’t work even though I’ve spent 20+ hours on the phone over weeks with different Apple staff and engineers.

I’ve bought your products for the past two decades but no more.

Honestly I don’t think it will be fixed till ios12.. it seems there’s probably not enough of us experiencing (or complaining about) this issue. My Mums iPhone 6 works fine whereas both my 5s and 6s+ have the same issue you have. In fact many app notifications do not show up when swiping screen down (show history). It’s disappointing because Apple are no more reliable than android for me now and their reliability was a huge reason I stuck with Apple.

Notifications have been screwed up in a lot of ways since ios11. There's another problem with them that's been driving me insane for months.

If I have banners turned on, and show in history turned on, and receive multiple Mail (or Messages) notifications at once, if I try to swipe the notifications away one at a time on the lock screen, there is a bug where ALL of the notifications will suddenly vanish from the notification center. If I unlock the phone, the notifications that vanished will appear back in my notification center. It doesn't happen every single time, and there seems to be no pattern as to when it's going to happen.

Im hoping ios12 isn't as horrible as ios11 has been.

My text messages are disappearing too! I’ll get a banner notification of the new message after restarting my phone and see the badge on the Messages app momentarily after unlocking, then the badge will quickly disappear and the message won’t be in my inbox, nor will it ever show up later. I keep losing important work messages and not even knowing who sent them :-(.

I’ve tried restoring my phone, resetting settings, using recovery apps to try to find the deleted messages, getting a new SIM card, and getting a new iPhone, all with no luck.

Apple told me they’d never heard of the problem when I sought support a couple of weeks ago. Their only advice was to do a clean install on my phone, so I’d lose my whole message history, which I need for work. Ugh! Has anyone tried that, and did it fix the problem?

I notice it is happening with other text replacement apps as well, like TextPlus which I use for work. Kind of annoying since I have my phone on vibrate all the time, when I get a vibration and look and there’s nothing there, I assume it’s push notifications of an email (which I don’t want to show up as a visible notification).

Hard to keep up when I’m busy with other work things. Ugh!!
