Change alert styles and settings for notifications
Customize your notifications with different alert styles so you can quickly act on emails, calendar invites, messages, and more.
To add or change an alert style for a notification, go to Settings > Notifications and select an app. Here are some alert styles that you can choose:
- Allow Notifications: Turn on to get notifications from the app you selected.
- Sounds: Have an app play a sound to alert you when you receive a notification.
- Show on Lock Screen: Turn on to see notifications from the app on your Lock screen.
- Show in History: See previous notifications from the app you select.
- Banners: Choose how you want notifications to appear when your device is unlocked. Tap Temporary to have alerts appear on the screen and then go away. Or tap Persistent to have alerts stay on the screen until you act on it.
- Show Previews: Choose what you want to see when you get a notification, like a text message.
Yep it’s not just the message app. In fact for me there’s only a few apps that continue to have their previous messages shown in the “history” (swipe down screen) feature. Luckily for me emails continue to stay on the lockscreen without disappearing as they are the only thing more important than messages for me. This started with ios11 and hopefully it will finish with ios12.

I had my phone replaced after a long battle with Apple today about this issue and was told there is nothing wrong with the phone.
I am also experiencing extreme battery drains from apps that aren’t even open and ‘Siri’ whom I do not use at all accounts for 41% of my daily battery usage with the calendar following at 23%.
It has to be firmware related and the more of us that raise the issue, the greater the priority will be to address the issue

I’m having the same issue. I rely on texts for work and if I don’t hear the text tone, I may miss the text altogether because it doesn’t show on the lock screen. Would love for a fix to this.

Same here. Very annoying. I’m missing messages if I do not hear the incoming sound. Please fix. I own a business and need to be able to glance at my phone to see message notifications.

Same here - but it only happens when my phone is plugged into a charger. Very bizarre and frustrating. Which Apple would fix this

Me too! Apple told me they’d never heard of the problem when I contacted them last week. Ugh!
Text message received when phone off. Notification on screen when turn ohone on. When sign in to ohone message is gone and does not show in thread.
Still having this problem today. Clearly it's not on Apple's radar or priority list to fix. 😠
