Ground to a halt

My daughter's MacBook Pro 13" (Mid 2012) recently start running so slowly that it has become unusable. Apple Hardware Test (extended) reports no problems and have done things like resetting the PRAM I eventually wiped the HD and reinstalled the software from a Time Machine backup. No change. So I've wiped the HD again and reinstalled macOS brining nothing across from any previous installation. It's still the same.

Any suggestions as to what I should do next?

You have absolutely NOTHING going on in there. You have free disk space, lots of RAM, no known Bad Actors. Nothing.

That is why it is completely bizarre that this check, which typically finishes in well under 3 minutes, should take 9 minutes plus on your Mac.

So my current theory is that your boot drive (or its SATA cable) is sick.

If you can use the smartdisk link inside the report (while etrecheck is still open) it may reveal more information about your drive. What I would expect to find is that some of the error counters (further down in the report) indicate accumulating Bad Blocks.

Oct 23, 2017 3:37 PM in response to Ifor Phillips

Yes. I think this item:

5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 100 100 050 Pre-fail Always - 2360

is telling you the drive has re-allocated 2,360 Bad Blocks. That is WAY too many. The way these things tend to fail, once you get more than a handful of bad Blocks, other ones nearby start to go as well, and soon you get a cascade effect and the drive becomes unusable.

When you re-write the drive with new data, such as the over 350,000 files that make up a MacOS re-install, the drive has an opportunity to substitute "spare" blocks from its private stash for any found bad. so right at the moment, it is possible no blocks are unusably bad.

What starts to happen is they do not read correctly on the first read, so the drive controller does a re-try -- up to 1000 times, hoping that one of those times, the data will read good and you can continue. This takes a while.

I think you will find that replacing that drive solves all the slowness complaints you had.

Oct 23, 2017 8:04 AM in response to Ifor Phillips

What OS is it running?

How much RAM does it have?

There could be an issue with your hard drive or the directory structure on it. Open Utilities > Disk Utility > select your HD on the left (the first item on the list) > make sure S.M.A.R.T. status says “Verified” (if it doesn’t it means there is a hardware issue with the HD, or an impending one) > click on the second item on the list (which should be Macintosh HD or the name you named your internal HD) > click on “First Aid” > (depending on your OS, you may have to click on Repair Disk or Verify Disk) > click on “Run” > allow it to finish running > click on “Show Details” > look at the last few lines and see if it says something like "Appears to be OK" and/or “Operation successful;” if it repaired anything, run it again, until you get two clean runs in a row. Click on “Done,” go to the Disk Utility menu and select “Quit Disk Utility.”

If it says “Cannot be repaired” or something like it any time during the run, run it a few more times to see if Disk Utility can repair it. If not, click on “Done,” go to the Disk Utility menu, select “Quit Disk Utility.”

RE: SATA Cables:

Brue computing posted an interesting Video on Youtube. The proposition was that the SATA cable problems in certain MacBooks was caused by abrasion against the machined inside of the aluminum case. Their solution? RED TAPE!

User uploaded file

(The drive has been removed for photographic clarity)

One strip applied to the case, and one strip applied to the underside of the cable.

You should use RED tape because it is associated with higher speeds, and will therefore keep the high speed bits from spilling out of the cable and accumulating inside the case.

OGELTHORPE insists that I have a fiduciary responsibility to tell you that--^

Many Users prefer to simply replace the cable than get involved with all this "red tape".

Oct 23, 2017 8:31 AM in response to tjk

It was running Sierra, but now, since the clean install, it is running High Sierra.

It has 8GB of RAM.

Disk Utility does not appear to display S.M.A.R.T. status as it used to, but clicking the info button top right and scrolling down, it says S.M.A.R.T. Status Not Supported.

I have run First Aid and got this:

Oct 23, 2017 12:08 PM in response to Ifor Phillips

Is your problem solved?

If not, this is an easy thing to try, the software is not invasive and does not even have to be installed, and its report provides no personally-identifiable information.

As I said above, sometimes this report shows things we never would have thought to ask about, all in one place. That is why I bothered to suggest it.

Maybe you can help with my wife's slightly older (mid 2010) MacBook Pro also. It's been slow for a long while so I have just doubled its RAM from 4GB to 8GB. It's certainly quicker than it was, but Etrecheck reports its performance as "Below Average".

Here's the Etrecheck report (and below the SMART report).
