what is the special thing to ask for to get a 30 pon cord that works with iPod classic Gen 6 ?
Got a new to me iPod classic gen 6. The 30 pin cord supplied will sync it and work in car. But no other 30 - usb will.
What is the trick to get a 2nd cord?

You said you had an iPod Classic, which is an older iPod, not a "newer" one.
Older cables (cords) do work with the iPod Classic. I use several cables of different ages with my Classic and a nano in my car, without any issues. (Classic is now not working...)
So, let's check this, one step at a time. Your iPod looks like the one below, correct?
Above is an iPod Classic, together with "older cords". There is however, a sting-in-the-tail in the picture (can you see it tt2?). I'll come back to it later.
I suspect that the shop staff are used to people referring to every iPod model as a "classic", so they probably blot out that particular word. If you mentioned a "newer iPod" and "6th generation" when buying your new cable, I would expect you to be offered one like that shown below, even if you mentioned "classic":
Above is the lightning connector, which fits newer iPods, such as this one below - the iPod Touch 6th generation:
So if you have an iPod Classic, with the wide 30-pin connector, then the cable in this link, from Apple: Apple 30-pin to USB Cable - Apple should work. It's known by Apple as the Apple 30-pin to USB Cable. Is that what you were sold?
And the sting-in-the-tail?
The Samsung cable, which looks like a 30-pin Apple dock connector will not fit any 30-pin iPod.

With a second hand device there is no guarantee that there isn't an undisclosed hardware issue. See Corrupt iPod Classic to check on the health of the hard drive. What exactly are you unable to do with the new device that you can do with the other one, and are there any error messages?
It also helps to be clear from the outset what the issue is. I read it that you one device, two cables, one of which works and one of which doesn't. The assumption was that you thought perhaps the old cable was about to fail so wanted to replace it. Sounds more likely that the device is the issue, not the cable.

I would appreciate turingtest2‘s answer if I had not already bought a new cord from Apple - and the cord ( from Apple ) does not work.
I have old 30 pin cords and I see no discernible markings to tell older functionalablity from newer.
But older cords definitely don’t work on the newer iPod.

Other that maybe calling an Apple store 120 miles away. No way I’ll get an sales person there who doesn’t know anything more about iPod 30 pin cords than I do.
Apologies for my slightly flippant answer earlier. I would assume that a cable bought from Apple would support all of the features of the device. They have always worked for me. If I recall some models of classic required a cable that has an authentication chip when being used to transmit audio or video data. Perhaps Apple stopped using this chip for later models and cables. 😕
Do you get any error messages when you try to use a new cable in your car?

Apple MC297LL/A iPod Classic MP3/MP4 (160gb )
This month(oct 2017)
The 80gb iPod classic i already had was giving me problems- so I felt replacement was not a bad option.
So I had cords from that and another iPod and iPhones (30 pin)
The older cords don’t work with the newly purchased iPod
The new 30 pin to USB from Apple doesn’t work on the newly purchased iPod
And yes I know the difference between a classic and Nano or other iPod ( hence why I said iPod Classic )
Buy it from Apple.
