Dolby Vision Flicker with Apple TV 4K

Having an issue whenever I output my Apple TV 4K in Dolby Vision 4K 60hz or 50hz- I get a very quick flicker (almost like a second image of the screen superimposed over the main image, but slightly shifted and discolered).

It it happens very quickly once every 30 seconds or so and is most noticeable on the main menu screen (but also happens during video playback). It only happens in Dolby Vision output. 4K HDR and 4K SDR are fine.

Im running on an LG OLED55E7P. I’ve tried multiple HDMI ports on the TV and multiple HDMI cables. Also running the latest LG software (4.70.07). Haven’t been able to figure out a solve.

Here is a video of the issue (most noticeable if you look at the Apple Music icon on the screen): https://youtu.be/ORGrnFdHnCs

I have the exact same problem on my brand new C7 65".

The problem disappears when using other sources (non Apple TV), or switching video modes/frequency, so is obviously not a problem with the TV itself (or Apple TV), at least hardware wise (seems to be software/firmware compatibility related)

Looks like a common problem that hopefully will be fixed with a software/firmware update in the [near?] future, especially given how many people are experiencing this issue.

After playing around with the latest tvOS build that supports native format switching I think I found a workaround. Instead setting the resolution to dolby vision 4k 60fps just leave it at HDR 4k 60fps. When playing back dolby vision content from Netflix it will switch to dolby vision mode automatically during playback and it will drop back to HDR when in the menus. The flicker does not happen during playback of dolby vision content.

Hi. I started noticing the EXACT same thing when LG pushed it's WEBOS updated last week. I have a 65" LG model 65SJ8500 and everything was working beautifully fine until LG pushed the update. Now i get that flicker and it's really disappointing.

I walked into the store where I bought the television and, of course, the LG rep is telling me that it's an AppleTV issue. The sales rep actually suggested I try another '4k source, like the LG 4k blu-ray player.'

I am trying a new HDMI input (moved from input 2 to input 3) to see if that helps.

So begins the months of troubleshooting before I ask LG for my money back.

I am experiencing the same issue with a Vizio M75-E1 that supports Dolby Vision. The cable I have passes the Apple TV test and then auto-switches to Dolby Vision after the test. I created a thread about it since most of the threads here are focusing on LG tvs but this is not isolated to LG. It's happening with Vizio too. I think I even saw a thread where it was occurring on Samsung TVs too.

I see people here stating that the Belkin cable Apple recommends for Dolby Vision doesn't even resolve the issue, which is pretty sad.

How has Apple not released a fix for this yet?!

I also have some DV flickering issues quite often, sometimes every 10 or 20 seconds. Took a slo-mo video and managed to capture a frame. Looks like some of the colours are way off horizontally. Could you confirm this is the same issue you guys are having?

Being in slo-mo the video is quite long, but there are a couple of them in the beginning:

Exact same problem here. I had a legacy Belkin HDMI cable that passed the Dolby Vision test. I saw those (typically red) flickers every few minutes. Tried a newer Belkin cable - but not the one recommended by Apple - and issue was same. I did order the cables Apple suggested, but I'm not sure that will solve it.

I will try the TruMotion = on and set to zero hack mentioned here as well and see if that improves things (after I try the new cables).

Glad I'm not the only one experiencing this!

In regards to the flickering issue, I am having the exact same problem with my new LG OLED65C7P and my ATV4K. I am also experiencing an issue with my SJ9 sound bar in which when I turn on the ATV4K, the TV and the sound bar turn on, but there isn't any audio UNTIL I switch the input from HDMI 1 to something else and then back to HDMI 1. It's extremely frustrating; especially when you have to describe the issue to your guests that want to utilize the TV. Has anybody experienced this as well?
