My iphone 8 plus is autocorrecting the letter I to I️. I have tried resetting the keyboard, dismissing the correction many times to unlearn it and turning off my phone. Why is it doing this and how do I make it stop?

Just spoke to Apple Care. There will likely be a device update to permanently fix the issue, but they gave me a temp solve that worked:

  • go to settings, general, keyboard, text replacement
  • hit the plus sign to create a new text replacement
  • in the “phrase” bucket type a lower case “i” and in the shortcut bucket type an upper case “I”; then hit save
  • hit the plus sign to create a second new text replacement
  • in the “phrase” bucket type an upper case “I” and in the shortcut bucket type another upper case “I”; then hit save

I am having this exact same issue. It started 3 days ago and I can't make it go away. I have turned off predictive and autocorrect, but sometimes it still occurs. When i google the ! square, it actually thinks I am goggling the correct "i". so it is interpreting the image to the correct letter. When I text someone, it shows the odd symbol. What is going on.

Downloading a new keyboard isn't a fix. that is a workaround. I would prefer to solve the issue.

Yes, I agree it must be the software. Ironic that it happened to most of us on Friday. When i simply shut off the phone and turn back on, it goes away temporarily. Sometimes it appears that it worked correctly, but recipients have the symbol show up on there end and they ask me what is going on. I have tried some other searches and some posts point to a Unicode issue. Just curious. Was anyone using SnapChat when this started. I was texting my daughter in snapchat when I first noticed the issue. It then also appeared in text.

If you are experiencing this issue and have a computer, PLEASE contact AppleCare so they can collect log data from your device and look at the code of the phone to fix.

Just got done and it took about 30 mins once I had a Senior Advisor.

They cannot fix our software without seeing the code of the issue.

Just some advice from someone who also wants this issue resolved ASAP.

Thank you!

I spent 2 hours this evening on with Apple Support. Tier 2 I created 2 crash reports and uploaded several screen shots of the issue. They are supposed to be calling me back on Thursday.

So i was able to fix the issue by doing the following:

1) We signed out of my Apple ID, restarted the device, deleted the keyboard dictionary and then restarted again. It was resolved. UNTIL I logged back into my Apple ID and then it resumed.

2) Also, 11.1 was supposed to correct this issue.

3) There have been calls on this issue and it is being reviewed.

That is all I got for now.

I updated to 11.1 this morning and it did not fix the issue so I am assuming the engineering department wasn't able to figure out the issue and create a fix for it in time before the update came out. They had me restore my phone and it fixed it for a few hours but came back. So no fix for it yet, but they took data logs off my phone so hopefully they will release another update very soon to fix this issue.
