How do I stop adult family members from charging my card for their purchases?

I’m sharing with a few (adult) family members who have full capabilities to buy apps, music, movies, etc. We have “Share Purchases” turned on which is great. However, whenever they buy content on their own account, my card is now billed instead of theirs. How can I disallow their purchases to be billed to my credit card on file while still allowing purchase sharing across all the accounts?

This isn't a matter of trust. They'll happily pay ME back for anything they buy from APPLE using their own devices. It's just a bit silly and inconvenient, that's all. As mentioned, these are adults who have cards of their own connected to their iTunes accounts. Just as they can connect gift cards to their account and use those independent of the card on file, it seems logical that the same transaction flow would apply to their credit/debit cards as well.

It is a bit odd that Apple recognizes these family members as adults, but requires me to pay for apps, games, movies, etc that are purchased by my siblings and parents who have their own families, live in their own homes, and have their own preferences.

Our main goal was to share Apple Music (since we have the family subscription). It's just weird that Apple assumes I want to pay for all of their purchases just because I've invited them to the Apple Music subscription, or iCloud sharing. More granularity seems needed here.

Well, you need to realize that you are using a plan designed for families. The intention was to provide a way for families to be able to share purchases, without having to share an Apple ID. So, it may be inconvenient for your use, but just be aware that you are employing an "off-label" use, so it may not work in the most convenient manner for you.

Best of luck,

In addition to LACAllen's excellent advice, you can have each person add an iTunes card to their own Apple ID. The balance on the gift card will be charged before it goes to your Credit Card.

But as LACAllen also said, Family Sharing is designed to have a single Organizer who pays for all purchases, so the only way to not pay is to have a high enough balance on their iTunes accounts to pay for their purchases.

Cheers,
