That iDVD Burn Problem AGAIN!

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice on this in a previous iDVD post.

One of you agreed with my idea of transferring everything to my older iMac running Snow Leopard and it worked but, I've just tried it again and now it keeps saying "File Can't be Found"!

I've had to completely build the whole iDVD project thing up from scratch to get it working and it's now actually burning normally (on the old iMac).

I have read all the previous bits of advice on how to get round this problem but there seems to be a lot of other people finding there are problems with these.

Can anyone tell me what the problem is now?

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), macOS High Sierra (10.13)

After you complete your iDVD project, if you change the location or name of any media files used in the project iDVD will not be able to find them. Return the files to their original names and locations and you should be good to go.

Also, you don't need to be going back to Snow Leopard on an old computer. iDVD works on the newer operating systems.

Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.

Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

Hi Rich839.

Thank you for replying.

You say that I don't need to go back to Snow Leopard which is great, so if it works on the newer operating systems (I'm on macOS High Sierra 10.13), is there a different procedure to follow or do I just click the burn button, as before, and leave it to do its job without it freezing?

Hi, makey,

The basic procedure is as before. Share out your movie to your desktop from iMovie and then drag it to the edge of an open iDVD project window, being careful to avoid any drop zones. It will import in. When you share out your movie from iMovie, choose 480p, or 540p if 480p is not available. You won't lose any quality by using the lower resolution, because iDVD will reduce whatever you import to 480 anyway. But if you drag into iDVD a hi res 1080 or 720 clip, that can sometimes cause rendering difficulties with iDVD and you can get freezing during the burn process. Also, instead of burning directly to a DVD it is recommended first to save your iDVD project as a disc image from the iDVD File menu, and then if the disc image plays O.K. on your Mac's DVD player app, you can burn your DVD from the disc image, using a DVD-R standard DVD. To burn from a disc image, Control-click on its icon on your desktop, and select to burn from the drop down menu that appears. The burn option will only appear if you have an optical drive DVD burner in your computer, or a plugged in external optical drive, and an inserted DVD-R disc inserted.

Hope this helps.

Further to my last reply, I'm now so desperate because, when I tried to install the Mountain Lion, I just got a message "This version of OSX is too old to install on this version of OSX" (i.e. High Sierra).

I just don't know what to do now because all the new DVD burn programs I've installed have my existing videos "Greyed Out" so are not accessible.

I just wish I could use iDVD again but I wondered which version I should try with:-

If I can't resolve this somehow I can have no more home movies!
