mdworker quit unexpectedly

I am getting Problem Reports from the mdworker operation: mdworker quit unexpectedly. This is happening every 10 to 15 seconds as mdworker indexes my drive. I have searched for a solution and not yet found one. My only solution thus far has been to stop indexing my drive altogether. This, obviously, isn't a long term solution.

The details of the report go on seemingly forever, but I am including here the top section which appears to be most pertinent.

Compatible, but not supported. I get that. This issue predates my memory upgrade.

In searching online, it appears the issue may actually be a Dropbox-related problem. Dropbox's Smart Sync feature is wreaking havoc for Mac users when files are store online and not locally, particularly PDF files. I've tried moving all the files to local storage, and the crash reports have ceased.

This solution isn't ideal because it consumes far more of my SSD than I want to devote to document storage. Alternatively, I can exclude my Dropbox online folders from Spotlight indexing. This means sacrificing availability for those files showing up in Spotlight searches.

Did you see anything else in the crash report that stood out?

That's kind of a problem with this site. See if you can just omit the "binary images" section. The sections following it will include the model identifier and specific hardware details.

The binary images section is lengthy but useful as it can include well-known troublemakers. It's probably the section containing "invalid characters" though.

It's a memory-related problem with mdworker, a Spotlight function, and not strictly related to Dropbox.

Unsupported configurations will result in unpredictable operation, and you must fix hardware before addressing software, because software requires supported hardware. Replace its originally installed memory. Crashreporter ought to extract more information than just its vendor (Crucial in your case).
