Slow Graphics Performance MacOS High Sierra

Am I the only one that witnessing horribly slow graphics performance

and high CPU usage in 10.13?

Any solutions to speed things up?

Youtube videos 1080p are jumpy

Quicklook of 3D models are horrible

System UI animations are jumpy

Very high CPU usage ("windowserver")

VMs are consuming 2X CPU as they did in 10.12

Had a Kernel panic twice already

Did Apple's graphics firmware/driver change destroy the performance of older models??

I can't trust the "updates" anymore. Both on MacOs and iOS sides. They are killing performance.

Using

2.3 GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2 GB

Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

MacBook Pro with Retina display, High Sierra

It seems that installing the NVIDIA driver works for me. Once installed you get a new NVIDIA preference pane where you can choose to use the NVIDIA driver or the bundled macOS driver. Worth a shot.

The user I was referring to has done this multiple times just on this thread. It becomes aggravating to see him wasting people’s time by suggesting things that many people have tried & confirmed do not help. He has been told that they do not help.

Then a few days passes and he’s at it again. suggesting people do a clean re-install and that he has NO problems himself... followed by its probably you machine. Stuff that has mostly been confirmed wrong, and very similar to the type of response we get from Apple.

Regardless of what Apple says about participating here or not, I doubt they wouldn’t pay third party contractors to participate in the forums. Yes I have no hard proof, but we all live in the real world with companies setting up off shore entities for tax reasons... this wouldn’t be far fetched.

I'll gladly take one for the team and get yelled at by the Forums Gods for posting Beta information in the Public forums if that only means that someone at Apple is actually reading these posts and thus actually paying attention to the issue.

I'm not sure, and you may not want to, but as Sierra was a free update, I think it is available to everyone, whether they purchased it or not, I was able to download it to create a bootable USB at Christmas even though it did not show up in my downloads.

Try this link for the download, it may then update you to Sierra like a normal OS update.

It will be more up to date and have later security patches at least.

Here's a short video showing the performance issues I have in Premiere. Well, I should say I have these GPU "laggy" performance issues everywhere, but dragging clips in Premiere is the fastest/easiest way to repeatedly demonstrate the exact issue. I see this same lag when I'm panning around Photoshop images, scrolling in Chrome, dragging icons around the desktop, scrolling in Outlook, etc.

GPU Issues on 2014 MBP - YouTube

As you can see in the clip, when I run at the lower resolution scaled Display Setting on my 4k display, dragging the clip is laggy. Once I increase it to it's native 4k resolution, dragging the same clip is much smoother. That lag may not seem like much from the video but trust me, it is impossibly aggravating to get anything done with it. I am running at 60hz on a Dell P2715Q monitor that functions flawlessly.

I don't want to run in full 4k, as I find the type uncomfortably small. In Sierra, I was able to run at a smaller Scaled resolution without this lag, it was only after I upgraded to HIgh Sierra that this lag appeared at the lower resolution.

Same issue here. Sierra was fine. Horrible graphics performance right after upgrade to High Sierra. Macbook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014). 2.5Ghz i7, 16 GB Ram, NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2GB and Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB. No matter what is running, "About this Mac" always shows the NVIDIA card is active.

This is REALLY annoying. I hope Apple can resolve this issue soon.

I agree it's a little better but far away from be accettable, for god sake we talking about a 4core i7 with 16 GB of ram and a discrete GPU with 2 GB of dedicated memory uncapable of playing youtube hd videos!! I dont believe this is a bug I'm afraid this is all part of the apple planned osolescency.

Another thing to consider is how long my hardware will last considering the really high temps of the GPU and gpu surrounding, I think I have been waiting enough for a solution, I will go for a downgrade...this is really sad, I really used to love apple products

I'm struggling with my 27" on the default 4k resolution and it's been an okay situation, but it's still straining my eyes to see the miniscule type and some applications simply don't offer proper font scaling options.

I'm going to give it another couple of weeks to see if Apple fixes it and then I'll have to do the whole reformat/restore and go back to Sierra (we don't use Time Machine as a corporate backup solution). This is however an entirely Apple High Sierra problem and it's just another nail in the coffin for using Apple computers at work. There's been quite a few nails added to that coffin in the past 18 months. I doubt I'll get another Mac when it's time to replace my system.

Swiping back and forth between spaces is almost comical now. It's so laggy that it jerks into place at the end on most full-screen apps. This is regardless of being hooked into a 27" Cinema Display or not.

Strange enough Adobe is mostly okay, but overall stability is just so much worse... I haven't even dared to try Steam since upgrading.

I can't remember the last time a release sucked this bad performance wise... Lion, maybe?

(Same system as many here: MBP Mid 2014 i7 16GB GT750)

Changing resolution does absolutely nothing for me, and I have a new Touchbar MacBook. And believe me: the lag is not subtle. I knew about the Windowserver problem the day I installed High Sierra and noticed the lags.. That does not really bring me closer to a final solution though.

The scaling thing does not really make a whole lot of sense even since there really is not a lot of actual scaling going on. Except for some bitmap images, it's just rendering stuff smaller, and since almost everything is vector based, that does not really cost any more resources. Only the fact that you can fit more stuff to draw will make a little difference.

Grant - the original topic is "Slow Graphics Performance MacOS High Sierra" so this thread is NOT about OLDER hardware just because you say that's what it is about. It is more noticeable in older machines but that's about it.

You have hammered people talking about beta software and you are hammering people who are actually 100% on topic! Give it a break dude!

My new MBP 15" with Radeon 555 performs slower than the old Integrated Graphics only machines.

So I have both new and old machines, does this mean I have your blessing to post?

Rather than fixing the issue - we are left bickering about what can and cannot be posted. Very sad.

I paid top dollar for a new machine only to see it go slower than my older Mac.

Grant unless you can contribute to the actual topic can you take your police work somewhere else and let us with a vested interest in this topic try to flag Apple's attention so we can get an actual fix!

I am not trying to trim anything out of this thread, or move to prohibit anything from being posted.

I am trying to point out to ONE User, whose name I Included, that he does NOT have the same problem as everybody else on these now 21 pages of posts. I was not doing this for anyone else but that person.

When everyone esle's problems are all solved, he will still have his same problems -- unless he takes some different actions than those being discussed here.

There is no way you can for sure say that I have a different issue than the others. All the symptoms fit in general, and I'm not the only one with new hardware that has the same problems. If anything I would even go so far as to say if you gather all the various symptoms, you would not get only two distinct problems. Some people have this, others have that. Some say this helps, others say it doesn't. It's basically all over the place.

Frankly I don't even care. I bought a 3000+ euro machine, and it is slower than a 2010 netbook at times. If I would not need this machine daily I would have brought it back already (even if I know this is most likely a software issue).. I just can't afford to part with it for that long 😢 . It's really a bad tradeoff: working on a slow machine, or not having it for several days..
