Slow Graphics Performance MacOS High Sierra

Am I the only one that witnessing horribly slow graphics performance

and high CPU usage in 10.13?

Any solutions to speed things up?

Youtube videos 1080p are jumpy

Quicklook of 3D models are horrible

System UI animations are jumpy

Very high CPU usage ("windowserver")

VMs are consuming 2X CPU as they did in 10.12

Had a Kernel panic twice already

Did Apple's graphics firmware/driver change destroy the performance of older models??

I can't trust the "updates" anymore. Both on MacOs and iOS sides. They are killing performance.

Using

2.3 GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2 GB

Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

MacBook Pro with Retina display, High Sierra

It seems that installing the NVIDIA driver works for me. Once installed you get a new NVIDIA preference pane where you can choose to use the NVIDIA driver or the bundled macOS driver. Worth a shot.

It is smother a litte bit so progress was made. But still far away from 10.12.x performance.

Agreed, a bit smoother but nothing compared to Sierra.

Basically what the did is just decresse the switch between intel and GeForce. So switch between full screen aps does not switch the active GPU. That is why it is smoother. But if I use Geforce only then it is lagging and shuttering.

Sadly, that doesn't seem to be so for Spotify (which uses the NVIDIA GPU exclusively).

Switching desktops to full screen Spotify will still hitch up - not quite as bad as before, but still a heinous drop of FPS.

I use an external display which means I have no GPU switching between my internal Intel and discrete 750m. It just stays with the 750m the entire time I'm getting the UI lag and freezes*. I'm not sure if you're suggesting the switchover of GPUs itself is causing some of your lag, rather than the use of the discrete GPU. If the former, I'm afraid I'm getting plenty of lag with zero switching happening.

I've had to hold off updating to 10.13.4 after reading that it may potentially break the ability to use any monitor that's using a DisplayLink cable. Not that I enjoy hitting my head off a desk but I have to wonder how an official release for an OS that's heralded as widely used in the creative industry can have a team of software engineers where nobody tried plugging in an external display - which is a widely used and depended-upon accessory in most creative industries. I feel there's more to it than that - second monitors are quite common for programmers too.

Will update when DisplayLink release new drivers or Apple release a fix.

*I've only been using an external for a few months and had the same issues without, so I've ruled it out as the cause of the issue which started with the launch of High Sierra.

Grant, you've saved me from banging my head off the desk. Thank you. I blame a lack of sleep last night for my brainmush of mixing the terms DisplayLink with DisplayPort (you really didn't guess my mix-up?). I was flabbergasted Apple would release an update that would render external monitors temporarily useless so it's pretty reassuring that I'd come to conclusion through lack of sleep.

As an iOS developer, this situation continues to get worse. With the new release of iOS 11.3, Apple no longer supports a version of Xcode (Xcode version 9.2 being the latest supported version on Sierra) that can build applications for the any new versions of iOS. To make matters even worse, after making the mistake of upgrading to iOS 11.3, I find out that Apple doesn't even provide official support to restore to a previous version of iOS.....

Hey there,

Let me clarify my setup: 15" MacBook Pro connected to a 27" LED Cinema Display.

This setup used to be buttery smooth when swiching spaces, and doing things in apps that required hardware acceleration (Chrome, Wavebox, Spotify, etc)... and after 10.13 it's been a janky slideshow ever since.

Now, if I'm only on my Macbook Pro it is pretty smooth, but that's never my setup - and not what I'm comparing to the previous Sierra performance.

Just wanted to clarify that. I think we all should put our setups in here so it's more clear what we're asking of the machines in question.

HI people,

Does anybody have totally fix this issue ? I don't know if it's related due to the hot temperatures here in France but the mac is totaly overheating like never before. I just came back from a genius bar and they have done a big clean on my ventilation system. But It hasn't change nothing. I'm worried now that i'm chained with a machine that didn't work properly, and it will be since one year soon. Total desapointment

Cheers mbp pro retina nvidia graphic cards dudes
