The error -1 is generally a hardware fault. Check your hardware

If you see error 53, use these steps.

If you see one of the errors below, you might have a hardware issue:

• 1, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16
• 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 56
• 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667 1669

Here's what to check. Try again after each step:

You cannot restore the phone, that is the problem. That is why you are getting the error, and the error is a hardware error. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple store if you wish to have it looked at. The only other option is to replace the phone.

Error 1 and -1 are exactly the same. It's a critical hardware fault. the phone will have to be replaced.

Follow the steps I provided and you read in the support document. As Tim stated, the two errors are the same, and if the earlier steps did not work, then contact Apple as it said.

That was on an iPhone 4 going to iOS 7 after he "fixed" it. Most of the steps would not apply to the iPhone 5s.
