File Associations Keep Changing

I have a problem where some of my file association keep changing the default program, whenever they feel like it. This is mainly happening with PDF and JPEG files opening in Adobe Software, when the default is set to Preview and always has been.

1. I have not updated any software recently nor I did change these associations to begin with

2. I have changed these via Get Info and checked "Always Open With"

3. I have changed these via OPT + RIGHT CLICK "Always Open With"

I am on OS X 10.11.6

Just to be clear, I rarely drag jpgs from Firefox when I do they have no extension. I've had an issue with a few jpegs opening up in "grab". That may be a result of this.

I mostly have a problem with PDFs switching between opening in Preview to opening in indesign, illustrator or photoshop. I reset, "always open with" and it goes away but comes back several time throughout the day while working. However, I'm not downloading PDF files or anything, so it's very confusing to me.

My firefox is updated I just haven't restarted it, so it is reading as the previous version.

Sorry for the confusion, this issue has been going on for a while and I have been through multiple OS updates since originally posting this question. I thought I had posted an update since then about talking with Apple and them suggesting to do the software update.

This put me on the current operating system (High Sierra) and I update regularly, so I've experience this issue from 10.11.6 up to 10.13.2 (now on 10.13.3). I've experience this every single day.

Please install EtreCheck and post the report.

I have ran EtreCheck multiple times on my machine throughout this process and there were never any issues,

I just ran it. The only issue is below:

System Launch Daemons:

[failed] com.apple.updateEFIDesktopPicture-apfs.plist (Apple, Inc. - installed 2018-01-19)

[not loaded] 39 Apple tasks

[loaded] 174 Apple tasks

[running] 118 Apple tasks

Basically, I was told by Apple it was either a "user issue" and that the only likely solution is that I would have to reinstall the operating system. I was also told that no one else had reported a similar issue. I tried for a few days of having multiple users on my machine, but I never really committed to it.

After deleting Firefox from my system, the issue stopped. Files are no longer changing permissions. Have not experienced the issue since deleting firefox and did not do anything other than delete Firefox. I can't imagine that this is due to having installed Firefox prior to 10.13. I recently tested Firefox on my laptop and the issues started. Laptop is on 10.13 as well... so I'm just not using Firefox anymore as it seems to be the culprit -- at least for me -- and removing it from my system took away the issue.

As far as what i was doing -- I mainly work in Adobe Creative Suite. The issue would occur after I saved my files from Indesign, Illustrator, Etc. and then happen randomly throughout the day. I was an avid Firefox user, but mainly used it to read email alongside Safari which was my main browser. Because of mainly using Safari, I rarely dragged files from Firefox. However, I did probably do it at some time. I mainly used it for email. Issue started with PDFs and then became all graphic files. This is why I was originally questioning if it was an Adobe issue and posted on forms over there. Again, it was so arbitrary that it was hard to pinpoint. I contacted Apple several times about the issue, and ran through the normal resets and was testing if it was a user issue on the computer. However, I experienced it as multiple users. Apple told me to update my software, which I did. And I still experienced the issue. The forum here picked up traction towards the issue a few weeks ago, which was nice to know I wasn't solo.

This issue just started on my laptop, which is on 10.13 after I installed Firefox to test whether or not it was a Firefox issue. It was not happening before, this is why I decided the culprit of my issues was Firefox-related.

In any case it only affects the file being dragged. It doesn't change the default app for all files.

Actually that wasn't what I found: dragging a JPG from Firefox produced a file which would open in Firefox, but then every other JPG on the computer also opened in Firefox, so I had to do the 'get info' thing to get them back - at which point opening one in Graphic Converter as it should produced the notice that I was opening GraphicConverter for the first time... I also had issues of RTF file opening in Pages or TextEdit rather than Nisus Writer, MP3s opening in iTunes rather than QT player, and so on.

I've now, a bit reluctantly, moved to Chrome and so far no problems.

I've found a workaround by using an app called MAGIC LAUNCH. It's an old app designed for 10.6 but still works now. It enables you to assign JPG and PSD files to always open with Adobe, and stops Firefox from changing that association when the file is dragged to the desktop.

It does this by actually assigning these file to the MAGIC LAUNCH (when you click the GET INFO it shows MAGIC LAUNCH as the application to open them with) and the rules you set in MAGIC LAUNCH open the files in Adobe.

I've also found that some website image uploaders also cause Firefox to change file association - I assume its dependent on the javascript scripts used by specific sites.
