How do I apply a promo code to purchase an app?

I received a gift promo code to download an app for no charge, but when I go to select it from the App store, it wants me to pay, I don't see any place to enter the code. If I click to pay, will I get charged, or will I get to another screen where it asks if I have any promo code?
