ios 11.1 battery drain

Like most, I was suffering from a huge battery drain since I have upgraded to ios 11.

I have waited for ios 11.1 as everyone was mentioning that it will fix the battery issue. I have upgraded to ios 11.1 two days ago but now I feel that my battery is draining even faster. I can see the battery percentage dropping 2 points every 2 to 3 minutes of usage.

A fully charged iPhone 6s running ios10 used to last me a full day. Now I need to recharge 2 to 3 times per day for the same workload.

iPhone 6s, iOS 11.1

Hi Wazicop,

Like many iPhone users, you are suffering the same as them because Apple have sent a letter out to their Apple websites saying that they will be slowing down iPhones 6s Plus and lower because of old batteries. They say that you can get a new battery for a way cheaper price, like for $29 instead of like $100. Your problem sits perfectly in line with the letter, so if I were you, I’d get a new battery.

Found out from online discussions that by removing the YouTube app from the iPhone the battery life improves a lot. Apparently YouTube are aware that their app has bugs running on iOS 11 which is contributing to the battery drain issue. From my personal observation I think the battery life has definitely improved on my iPhone 6s after removing the YouTube app but not completely. It still seems that iOS 11 needs addressing from Apple.

So, since ios 11.1.2 did not solve my battery drain issue, I connected my phone to iTunes and performed a Phone Restore and then restored my data from a very recent backup. After a few days of use I have noticed an improvement in the battery issue.

The phone is nowhere what is used to be in battery terms as it was under ios 10 but it is much better than it was before I restored it. Now it barely manages through the day on a single charge.

Apple still needs to work on improving the battery consumption under ios 11.

Same thing here. I plugged my phone in to recharge and actually watched the charge drop while plugged in. I used another outlet and it continued to drop. I went to apps and turned a couple off and it started to gain charge. Part of my issue with these updates is that Apple makes "on" the default setting when it adds new bells and whistles. You have to go through all the settings and turn off the ones you don't want. I am not grateful for the new app that blocks my phone from being used in a moving car. "On" was the default setting on that one until I turned it off. Several updates ago, my phone became hot to the touch after an update. Found a bunch of health related apps on by default. Turned them all off and the phone cooled down. Now I thoroughly check the settings after update.

I wouldn't say it's as much of an issue if YouTube was installed but not being used directly. But even open apps that sit in the background are still using some resource, particularly if Background App Refresh is switched on. I also saw in a forum that YouTube are aware of this issue on iOS 11 and are currently working on an update - in the meantime they recommend watching YouTube videos via a web browser instead.

For me, my iPhone 6s completely drains from 100% to 0% in just two hours of watching a YouTube video using the app.

Holding shift (or option on mac) and clicking Restore iPhone opens your file explorer (or finder) and lets you select it from where its at.

As far as restoring all your data - I would proceed carefully and make backups of everything in iTunes before you do anything. Installing iOS 10.3.3 from the .ipsw file is going to be like having a new phone - none of your pictures or apps will be preserved.

You were right The Skeptic, this time I found they added a new option, "I recently upgraded to iOS 10" (they should have written 11, wonder why they had written 10). I selected that and was able to chat with the support. He suggested me a lot of things, but my battery is still the same.

Highlights from our chat:

1. I was on 11.1.2 at that time, he asked me to update to 11.2. He told me that iOS has many battery saving/improving fixes.

2. He ran a remote diagnostic test on my device and found that the battery did not have any problems.

3. Asked me for app battery usage summary screenshot.

4. I had only 350 mb of free space, he said that could be one reason for battery issue.

5. To save battery he asked me turn on auto brightness(which was already ON), reduce notifications, reduce Background App Refresh, use Low Power Mode more frequently.

6. Updating my phone to 11.2 in RECOVERY MODE.

BTW I have addressed all the points mentioned above.

In my phone he also found that system(OS) is taking up 7gb of space, which is abnormal(I think normally it is around 4 gb ), that should have been cleared automatically but cos of some bug it is not cleared is what he said. Updating iOS in RECOVERY MODE will clear that I was told but it did not.

Do not let anyone from apple or otherwise say it is your hardware or how you are using it. Out of the 80 to hundred comments from here and other accredited forums and testers all agree, 11. to 11.2.2 have horrible battery life even if everything is off in your phone. I could go without a charge with 10.3.3 for over two days with almost everything functioning like app refresh, notifications, location services etc. Now with 11.2.2, I am basically have an Iphone 6s that is running like a flip phone so can save battery performance. If Apple wants to save face they better do something regarding this issue instead of covering up the problem it as they did with the slowdown issue. IOS 11 is doing something in the background that is draining the battery.
