How can I AirPlay content without Apple TV

I like to easily screen-mirror OS or iOS devices content without having to use Apple TV or built-in software. How Can I do it?

iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 11.1

You don't need to use AirPlay at all if you use a Lighting Digital AV Adapter.

The adapter plugs into the lighting port on your iOS device and connects your iOS device directly to the TV via HDMI. The screen on your iOS device will automatically appear on your TV (when the TV is set to the matching HDMI input in which your iOS device is connected).

You can also charge your device while it is connected to the TV with the adapter.

I don't believe you can currently assuming your are talking about TVs.

Apple's Airplay is licensed to 3rd party manufacturers for audio output, but as far as I'm aware not for video output currently.

You may find if your TV has a protocol similar to Airplay there may be a 3rd party app that could output some content but I suspect mirroring of all screen content on iOS would be prohibited for several reasons.

What are you trying to mirror ?

If say you wanted to see a desktop display on iOS to control the desktop remotely, you could using one of many screen sharing software solutions.

I also believe there was a method to record AppleTV output in Quicktime eg to record game play, but I've never tried this, and it won't work over USB C with ATV 4k as it no longer has USB C.
