how do I stop messages from suggesting contacts?

Every time I start a new message in my messages app, it comes up with a list of suggestions, including all past group conversations, deleted contacts and old phone numbers that are no longer current. It takes me forever to find the right one to start the message. How do I stop this?

iPhone SE, iOS 11.1

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. I understand that you'd like to disable the feature that suggests contacts from emails, previous conversations, and previous contacts. I know it's important to configure these features as you'd like them; I can help. To prevent this from happening, tap Settings > Contacts > Siri & Search, from here disable "Find Contacts in Other Apps".
