Using Physical Buttons to start/stop an activity or run?

Question about the Apple Watch and starting/stopping a fitness activity, if anyone knows:

Can you use the mechanical buttons to start/stop a run or activity, with either Apple's own fitness app or any other running app?

My wife and I are thinking about getting an Apple Watch, but we are used to pressing a physical, mechanical button to start/stop our runs. We are aware that pressing the digital crown and the side button will work like this, but are curious if that extends any into any other apps.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi

That is not possible via the built-in Workout app (although a workout can be paused by pressing the side button and Digital Crown together):

End, pause, or lock

If you would like to submit a feature request to Apple, then you can do so here:

For information about the features of third-party fitness tracking apps, I suggest that you consult the developer's app descriptions in the App Store and/or their linked support resources.

To browse and search for apps with the results pre-filtered to include only those iPhone apps that also include an app for Apple Watch, use the Watch app on your iPhone. Apps can be searched by keyword or app name via the Search tab.
