Printing problems with HP Color LaserJet CP5520 after upgrading to HighSierra

I have 5 Macs running in a network with a HP CP5525dn printer. After i had upgraded 2 of them to MacOS 10.13 High Sierra, we have printing issues with these Macs. Mostly printing from Excel or PDF created from Excel, or Word files with embedded Excel spreadsheets. The 3 Macs running on 10.12 Sierra don't have these issues and we never encountered these before.

The output is a mostly blank page with following text: "ERROR: Undefinedresult, OFFENDING COMMAND: show"

As usual in such cases Apple, MS and HP all point at each other. I have installed the latest driver 3.8.0.3 (dated 24 August 2017) and latest HighSierra updates. However the HP driver is from prior the release of High Sierra, although Apple claimed that printer driver for my printer should be included in the MacOS upgrades. Also MS Office is also fully up-to-date.

Anyone a solution? The printer has become virtually useless to us -despite being not even 4 years old- so otherwise I will need to replace it....This was actually the advice given by HP (can you believe that !)

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), macOS High Sierra (10.13.1)

You updated the firmware, but did not mention the HP Easy Start (Oct 11, 2017) that has been updated for High Sierra, and will get the latest printer driver for the CP5525dn. Give that a whirl and see if it solves your printer issues.

Eureka! Resetting the printing system seems to work...I have tested this with both the MacBook Pro and iMac with files which previously failed and all good now.

I wonder why neither HP nor Apple Support could figure this out.....Their recommendation respectively was "you may consider buying a new printer" and "only solution left is to reinstall Sierra using TimeMachine"

Thanks for the solution because this became extremely frustrating.

I am having a similar problem but with a different HP color laser printer (M551). However, I get, what appears to be, a Postscript error while printing some files. First page prints out with the error but remaining document doesn't. When watching the print spool, the job disappears without any movement of the spool status bar. All of this started happening to the same MBPro, on the same printer, on the same network upon the update to High Sierra last month. All good prior to that point. I have a case with apple opened but they have no resolution.

This issue appears to have started with High Sierra and the same or very similar problems are in a number of different HP user web discussion threads, as well, on the HP site.

I have exactly the same problem.

I am using an HP Color Laserjet M551. Worked PERFECTLY on MBPro 13" (2017) prior to upgrade to High Sierra. However after the upgrade, MS Office and PDF files are generating the exact same error that you describe when printing from MS Office and from Preview. It looks like a Postscript error. And these same files print perfectly from a MBAir on Sierra to the same printer on the same network. The files also print perfectly to an OfficeJet from the MBPro. Just not to the Color laser printer.

Error printed on first page of printout.

  • ERROR: undefinedresult
  • OFFENDING COMMAND: xshow

I have the latest, greatest updates on both the MBPro and the latest firmware on the printer, from about 6 weeks ago.

There is definitely a problem with High Sierra. PCL protocol prints fine (not Postscript), but PCL is black and white and low resolution...

I have been talking to apple for a week and have spent about 3 hours with them on the phone trying to solve the problem. No luck. If anyone from Apple is listening: Case # ***.
