I want to add page numbers to a multi-page pdf in Preview. I saw one how-to online that said to open "tools" and click on add page numbers. There is no such option in my tools. I am using a MacBook Pro with Sierra OSX 10.12.8 and Preview 9.

You can certainly do it via annotation (Use the Preview app to view and edit images and PDFs), but I don't think there is a built-in way to modify all the PDF pages at once. There are likely to be third party solutions, e.g., via Adobe.
You should look for pdf Paginate on the Mac Appstore.

I'm very disappointed in Preview. In Adobe I had to download to an expensive Adobe pro, but I need to be able to add page numbers after the fact, so I had to get it. Preview should have the ability to add page numbers on all the pages in a pdf.
