“Garbled” sound over Bluetooth in vehicle

Phone calls - and Siri - are “garbled” sounding probably 90% of the time on my iPhone 8 Plus. I am

Just downloading the 11.1 update as we speak but none of the other 11 updates have been any help. I thought the problem was the Bluetooth in my Lincoln Navigator but my son connected his phone and there is no issue with his. Any ideas what the problem could be or how to fix it?

Hello gpmom2002,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help with the sound once your iPhone 8 Plus is paired with your Lincoln Navigator. I understand how important it is to have this connection working properly for your safety while driving and will be happy to offer some things to check.

I would like to recommend these two help articles:

1. Get help connecting your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with your car stereo

2. Set up CarPlay to use with your iPhone

The first article has options to try depending if you are connected via bluetooth, a USB connection, or through CarPlay. The second article is specifically for CarPlay. There are many good troubleshooting steps provided in both articles. Since you did not mention what iPhone and iOS version your son is using, there is also a step to help you check if the Lincoln Navigator car stereo needs an update to work with your newer iPhone 8 Plus or the newer iOS 11 versions, and states:

6. Check your car’s manual for help. You might need to install firmware updates for your stereo.

Thanks again and have a great rest of your day.

Thank you for your reply. I was having the same issue with my old 6 plus that was running 10.3.3 BEFORE the iOS 11 came out. Updating to iOS 11 did not help that phone. I got the new 8 plus and it was better for a short time but is now garbled 95% of the time. But it will sometimes go from garbled to fine to garbled again all during the same conversation. My son is running 10.3.2 on his 6S and his phone works fine with my Navigator Bluetooth so I know it’s not the Bluetooth in my Navigator physically not working. I just find it odd that I’ve had the same problem with two phones running two different operating systems yet my sons phone is completely fine. I’m starting to think Bluetooth just hates me. 😉
