On further investigation, I looked at the two iPhones in my home and my iPad Pro to boot.
The iPhone 6 is my old machine and the Live Mode icon is not there in the Camera APP because it is too old and cannot handle this feature. All the other machines I can lay my hands on whilst watching tennis include…
• Wife’s iPhone 7+ : Toggle present and feature works
• iPad Pro penultimate model : Live mode not present but function works. Go figure
• iPhone 6: Toggle mode not present and feature does not work
And so, there is a bug with the latest OS 11.2.2 that silences the camera clicks on old machines that do not handle live preview mode in Camera. For some reason it still works in my iPad Pro which does not support live preview.
With so many combinations and permutations out there, no wonder Apple engineers when they are having a planning meeting say …. “My god, we want to add a new feature but this model won’t handle it and this model will handle it sometimes but the new model handles it properly”.
Second voice says - “I have a solution - let’s put a bug in the next “security update” to make all the old models crawl to a paralytic stop and make our users update their hardware. Problem fixed.”
Accountant chips in saying “You bet, how soon can you get that out the door?”
Of course, this conversation would never go on inside the board room of the World’s highest capitalisation Company. That is being cynical.
I hope Apple Programmers recognise the focus of the bug and try to restore it sometime in their next “Security” update.
I only would like it for the convenience that when I choose to take a photo, the sound adds confirmation that I have actually taken a photograph.
