Camera shutter sound not working on iPhone 8 IOS 11.1

I’ve tried to get the camera shutter sound to work on my iPhone 8 and on my mums iPhone 6 and nothing seems to work. Is it an error with the update or did they change it so it is muted everytime you take a photo? I’ve tried using my ringer and alert sounds, the change with buttons on and off, turning off live photo and nothing seems to work! It use to be really useful for my mother as she’s getting older and doesn’t know when the photo has taken without the sound. Someone help!

I just got an iPhone 8 plus and noticed that in portrait mode and square, the sound is there. In Photo mode, there is no sound. The only difference is that Photo mode has the "Live" on. Turn "Live" off, and the sound returns.

yep, this worked for me:

To adjust the volume of the camera shutter sound:

  • Use the Ringer and Alerts volume slider in Settings > Sounds & Haptics.
  • The camera shutter sound can also be muted using the Ring/Silent switch - check the position of the switch.

(In some countries, muting is disabled).

  • It is normal for there to be no camera shutter sound when taking Live Photos.

To toggle Live Photos on / off, tap the Live Photos icon above the camera viewfinder:

On further investigation, I looked at the two iPhones in my home and my iPad Pro to boot.

The iPhone 6 is my old machine and the Live Mode icon is not there in the Camera APP because it is too old and cannot handle this feature. All the other machines I can lay my hands on whilst watching tennis include…

• Wife’s iPhone 7+ : Toggle present and feature works

• iPad Pro penultimate model : Live mode not present but function works. Go figure

• iPhone 6: Toggle mode not present and feature does not work

And so, there is a bug with the latest OS 11.2.2 that silences the camera clicks on old machines that do not handle live preview mode in Camera. For some reason it still works in my iPad Pro which does not support live preview.

With so many combinations and permutations out there, no wonder Apple engineers when they are having a planning meeting say …. “My god, we want to add a new feature but this model won’t handle it and this model will handle it sometimes but the new model handles it properly”.

Second voice says - “I have a solution - let’s put a bug in the next “security update” to make all the old models crawl to a paralytic stop and make our users update their hardware. Problem fixed.

Accountant chips in saying “You bet, how soon can you get that out the door?

Of course, this conversation would never go on inside the board room of the World’s highest capitalisation Company. That is being cynical.

I hope Apple Programmers recognise the focus of the bug and try to restore it sometime in their next “Security” update.

I only would like it for the convenience that when I choose to take a photo, the sound adds confirmation that I have actually taken a photograph.

Dear Frank,

I thought I made it clear that I have an iPhone 6 which does not support live capture. I tried to make a point that the problem is that Apple has overlooked this tiny detail and defaulted to "off" for the capture click and linked it to a setting which is not available in all phones. It's a bit like setting passwords to backup files that are never set by the user. The OS does it in the background, again probably because of a model / facility conflict oversight. Boy am I glad I am not writing software anymore. It would drive anyone of sane temperament quite mad.

I can live with this, it won't stop me taking pictures.

I just hope the software engineers have it on their list to change one or two lines of code to accommodate this variation and in the next "security" release, I can have my old camera click back on again. I never know if the camera has actually taken a photo, particularly if I am looking at the subject, not the camera. I have never taken a "selfie", I'm not that vain.

My biggest problem with Apple is trying to use Mail on an IOS device like an iPad. Have you ever struggled to scroll through a list of a thousand eMails in your account, getting tired trying to get to the first one in the list? There should be a search box outside the list and a button to quickly move to the top of the list (and one for the bottom of the list as well for completeness sake.) I'll copy this to the appropriate forum.

Hey, my name is Denise and I just bought my iPhone 8+ yesterday and noticed that I had no shutter sound. I tried everything, with no luck.

Read your post and turned of live mode and BANG there was my shutter sound.

My last phone was a 6 so I’ve jumped a generation, and a lot of this new stuff on the 8 I’m just learning.

So thank you for showing us how to get something as simple as shutter sound. I guess when you get used to something you expect it to be there.

So again. Thanks for the help.

Anyone reading this....it works!!

Now if I can just learn what “live mode means” lol.
