Apple TV 4K Dolby Vision + LG OLED65C7P = Flicker bug

Does anyone with a 2017 LG OLED TV have this issue?: When my Apple TV 4K is set to Dolby Vision mode and connected to my LG OLED65C7P TV, the image on the TV screen intermittently flashes a ghost image of the screen. The ghost image, which lasts for a micro second, is the onscreen image offset to the right. This happens randomly, up to several times a minute. See picture below for a capture frame of the ghost image bug in action:

You can see the ghost images of app icons are offset to the right.

I had my Apple TV unit replaced, but the problem persists. And just to be clear, I'm using the high-end/spendy Belkin HDMI cables that Apple recommends on its Apple TV 4K webpage. The tvOS and LG's OS are both up to date. The LG TV has its "high color" HDR mode enabled for the HDMI input I'm using.

The flashing frames appear on the Apple TV home screen, in the screen savers, and in streaming content (even on HBONow shows, which are not encoded for Dolby Vision or HDR10). When I turn off Dolby Vision, setting the Apple TV to either HDR10 or SDR, the flickering ceases.

So the TV seems to be fine, and the cables and software and settings are all up to the latest specs. Which leads me to believe that this bug is a compatability issue between the Apple TV and the LG TV. The LG TV handles Dolby Vision just fine on its own (via the built in Netflix app on the TV)--there's absolutely no flickering when you take the Apple TV out of the equation.

I posted about this problem in a couple of existing threads, but I figured I'd start a new thread because this issue is a bit different than other HDR problems and seems to be specific to LG OLED TVs. I'm hoping the Apple TV engineers will see this post and look into the issue for a near-future software fix.

I also have this issue with the LG OLED65B7P. It occurs every couple of minutes no matter what you are doing; while on the home screen, using Netflix, watching Apple Movies, even the screen saver. I use the Belkin Ultra High Speed HDMI cable Apple recommends. I started to suspect it was Dolby Vision but didn't think to turn it off until I saw this post, thanks. I hope it is fixed soon, it is very annoying. For now, I'll just use HDR10.

I have the same set up and my LG is brand new (set it up last week). I started to notice this behavior a couple of days after I set it up. I use the apple tv 4k almost exclusively for my streaming content. Until this thread, I thought it was the beginning stages of the infamous LG tv flicker issue - but it doesnt look like the Youtube videos... It happens so fast I dont know if it is the same ghosting in your pic..but it is closer to what you describe. I will switch over to HDR 10 and test the TrueMotion slider settings to see what happens. I will also see how the display looks on my Amazon FireTV. The Apple TV 4K has been so nice I havent even tested my Amazon TV since hooking up the new LG.

I have this same issue with my LGOLED65B7A. Didn't make the connection that it happened only on Dolby Vision until I saw this thread.

Based on another comment the two sliders for TruMotion are De-Judder (0 by default) and De-Blur (10 by default). Going to run with this for the next few days to see if it fixes the problem, but this should be addressed by an Apple Engineer, no sense that the Apple TV 4k has issues with an out-of-the-box configuration for an LG OLED TV.

Found this thread through some Google searching. I'm having the same exact issue on my LG B7A. Was about to return my Apple TV but will go ahead and keep it. Shame I can't use Dolby Vision for now but glad you figured out that HDR gets rid of the problem. Please give an update if you find a fix and I'll do the same.

EDIT: Didn't see all the replies until I posted this. Trying that de-blur slider method as well. Thanks for the tip!

I had a similar problem when connecting my AppleTV 4k to Vizio M65-D0.

The issue was occurring when I was plugged into HDMI 2 and had the Apple TV Setup for Dobly Vision 4K @ 60hz.

The solution was to plug the Apple TV directly into HDMI 1.

Spec Sheet - https://www.vizio.com/m65d0.html

I am not sure if the exact tech reasons why this fixed my problem. I assume that it has to do with the fact that the specs on each HDMI port on the display are different.

Now that I am plugged directly into the HDMI 1, I have had zero problems with picture or audio.

Hope this helps someone else out there.

I am having the same issue and also returned my original Apple TV becasue I thought that was bad. I have tried changing cables and no improvement. All of my software is up to date and sadly a month later it’s still not fixed. I was actually wondering if it could be that my TV has an issue with Dolby Vision as this is the only device I own that supports it. I did have a question though, how do you know the built in Netflix app has Dolby Vision? I don’t seem to have that display option in LG tv setting when I am on the app. I can put the picture mode in HDR Effect, but not Dolby Vision.

The latest update fixed my flickering problem but, before that I used a hack I saw on reddit that was to go to the true motion settings and select “user”. Then set each value to 0. Also, there is a setting in the Apple TV setting where you can have the TV video setting change automatically to match whatever you are watching. For example, if an iTunes movie is coded with Dolby Vision it will make the TV match, and if it is HDRc it will change it to that for playback. It is a really nifty feature. Hope you get your set working seamlessly.
