Apple TV 4K Dolby Vision + LG OLED65C7P = Flicker bug
Does anyone with a 2017 LG OLED TV have this issue?: When my Apple TV 4K is set to Dolby Vision mode and connected to my LG OLED65C7P TV, the image on the TV screen intermittently flashes a ghost image of the screen. The ghost image, which lasts for a micro second, is the onscreen image offset to the right. This happens randomly, up to several times a minute. You can see the ghost images of app icons are offset to the right.
I had my Apple TV unit replaced, but the problem persists. And just to be clear, I'm using the high-end/spendy Belkin HDMI cables that Apple recommends on its Apple TV 4K webpage. The tvOS and LG's OS are both up to date. The LG TV has its "high color" HDR mode enabled for the HDMI input I'm using.
The flashing frames appear on the Apple TV home screen, in the screen savers, and in streaming content (even on HBONow shows, which are not encoded for Dolby Vision or HDR10). When I turn off Dolby Vision, setting the Apple TV to either HDR10 or SDR, the flickering ceases.
So the TV seems to be fine, and the cables and software and settings are all up to the latest specs. Which leads me to believe that this bug is a compatability issue between the Apple TV and the LG TV. The LG TV handles Dolby Vision just fine on its own (via the built in Netflix app on the TV)--there's absolutely no flickering when you take the Apple TV out of the equation.
I posted about this problem in a couple of existing threads, but I figured I'd start a new thread because this issue is a bit different than other HDR problems and seems to be specific to LG OLED TVs. I'm hoping the Apple TV engineers will see this post and look into the issue for a near-future software fix.
