iPhone X - screen won't turn off

Hi all

I have an iPhone currently running iOS11.1 (the most recent update?).

Every time I receive any notification (i.e. a text, whatsapp message, any message from an app etc) while my phone is locked, my iPhone alerts me with the screen turning on and then it stays on indefinitely unless I press the power button to turn it off.

I have enabled autolock to kick in after 30 seconds and turned off rise to wake, however the problem still persists. This means that my iPhone battery drains with the screen not automatically turning off if I don't acknowledge receiving the notification and manually pressing the power button.

Is there any solution / fix or are we meant to wait for the next software update?

Thanks

Hamish

Hi Hamish,

I joined the apple community to specifically answer this question because it was annoying me so much. My iPhone X started to display the same issue. A soft/hard rest fixes the problem but only temporarily.

Once my phone entered it's 'not going to sleep on lock screen' mode I noticed something else strange occurring. When using Spotify or iTunes, my phone's music would stop whenever I pressed the sleep/wake button or if the phone went onto standby by itself while Spotify was open. This is not usual behaviour as obviously the music never usually stops when the screen is turned off.

After a bit of digging into similar 'music stopping' situations, this seems to happen on both iPhone X and iPhone 8 devices and it appears related to apple pay. I don't use apple pay personally, but I have a sticky bank tag on my phone cover right where the NFC chip is which I use for credit card payments. It uses it's own NFC chip. But whenever I payed for something with my bank tag, the screen would light up and 'notify' me to try using apple pay. After that, phone enters 'not going to sleep on lock screen' mode and music would stop playing when pressing the sleep/button. Only option after that is to reset the phone.

The one thing that worked for me was to disable the notifications from Wallet (and therefore apple pay). I haven't had a problem since. Unfortunately, if you do you use apple pay, you might be out of luck with this work around.

I hope this helps you and/or others out there because it frustrated me for weeks.

Best of luck,

Anthony.

I’m having the same issue, my home lock screen just stays lit randomly and won’t turn off unless I hit the sleep button, this happen all everyday. This is my second iPhone X I had it replaced with a brand new one cause I was still within the 2 week refund period. Did the same restore from my iPhone 7 Plus and unfortunately the problem still persists. I’m thinking it’s software but why is the issue happening on the 2017 released phones?

Hi,

Just to add this has also been happening to me and I've also noticed 'raise to wake' could be bugged also. The phone is turning on by its self (without a notification) in my pocket then staying on, subsequently draining the battery as you wouldn't notice your phone is constantly staying turned on inside your pocket. I appreciate raise to wake might very well turn on within my pocket due to leg movement but it shouldn't be staying on indefinitely.

Tested the notification bug and my phone does stay on constantly after a notification even with a 30 second timer. Restarted (normal restart) the phone and it's since resolved the notification issue but for how long?

Just adding my name to the list of users with this issue. My iPX is a week old, fully updated, memory about 1/2 full and OS was transferred from my previous 6s+. This issue started yesterday. A reboot just now seems to have corrected the issue, for now. I do have "shake to undo" enabled as mentioned in a previous post. I'm going to leave it enabled, for now, to see if it this is somehow related.

Exactly! My issue, just as described above. I woke up, night after night with my iPhone X under plane mode, with my battery down by at least 10%, whereas my previous iPhone 7 Plus just used 1-2% of its battery charge throughout a night. An Apple advisor suggested trying to switch off True Tone, etc. just in case... to no use. Hopefully, before a multi-night ordeal trying all the potential battery suckers, I came across (thanks to my wife's suggestion) this trend and tried iDemon's simple but totally unsuspected solution, which proved instantly successful, and hopefully permanent. I was on the verge of returning my almost-one-week-old iPhone X in despair, doubly disappointed after its claiming 2 extra hours' battery yield than its predecessors. Thanks, iDemon!
