MAC Mail and charter.net problems

I have just opened a charter.net account. I have set up the email on their website, and it works using the website. I have also setup the charter email account on my iPhone. However, when I attempt to add the charter.net email account to the Apple Mail application, I get the spinning wheel for about 15 minutes and then "cannot verify user name or password"
