Why does iPhone X not allow backup to iCloud?

My most recent backup on my iPhone 7 was 5 minutes before setting up my new iPhone X. Even though I have not added any significant data (the previous backups, including an iPad on the same account totaled 2.9 GB and I have the base 5 GB limit), every time my new phone is plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi, I get the alert that there isn’t enough space available to backup my phone. ***?!? Are you saying that I need to pay a subscription fee to backup my phone because I agreed to spend the $1k to get the newest model? Or are you trying to suggest that maybe I should look into migrating myself out of the Apple ecosystem because you’ve decided that you no longer need to differentiate yourselves from the rest of the market by not beta testing your product on your unsuspecting customers?

We are "saying" anything, since "we" are just users like you. You have three choices for backing up your new $1000 phone. You can back it up to iTunes by hooking it up to iTunes on the computer you sync with, or you can pay .99 cents a month to expand your iCloud memory to 50 GB - a size that reasonably can be expected to be large enough for a backup for your new device.

Or, you could always just not back up at all (or only back up a couple of things).

I have plenty of iCloud storage. I had my iPhone 6 backed up just before buying the new iPhone X. Now my iPhone x that I have had for one week, will not backup. It is taking hours and doesn't do anything. It has never backed up in the entire week that I have had it. I don't want to connect it to my iMac because the last time I did that, everything on my phone changed! what can I do to back it up?
