Security Update 2017-001 10.12.6 Problem- having problems with this update on my iMac. I keep seeing a message that the security update cannot be completed. After sever restarts and tries this is unresolved. Anyone having this issue and any tips

iTunes and Safari updates completed but I repeatedly get a message saying the Security update was not completed. I have restarted 5 times and the update keeps downloading and completing but i still get the same message. Is anyone else experiencing this issue and are there any suggestions on how to resolve.

This issue is on my mid-2011 27-inch iMac.

Hello georgefromspring,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are unable to complete a software update on your Mac. To help resolve your issue, use safe mode to start up your Mac as it does the following things:

  • Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
  • Loads only required kernel extensions
  • Prevents startup items and login items from opening automatically
  • Disables user-installed fonts
  • Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Log into your user account and try installing this software again while in safe mode. You may have to delete the existing software update in the Applications folder and download a new copy of the update from the Mac App Store.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

I have the same problem with my iMac 27in Late 2012 Sierra 10.12.6.

I tried twice to install the update and each time the update stalled after the restart with a zero progress bar. I left it for a long while thinking it was downloading something, but got no joy. The log files didn't show anything that I could make sense of.

Each time I had to re-install the Operating System. Shades of Windows XP!

I have installed the other updates that pop up in App Store but I am not going to attempt this "Security" update again.

I tried the command line alternative and after the restart the log in stalled at about ¾ as before.

I started in recovery mode and ran first aid to no avail. I then started in single user mode and ran the tinker system command line scripts, which, luckily, I had previously installed. I used the tts tool to delete the caches. This seems to have worked because the system boots fine now.
