Sony DCR-HC96

3weeks ago i bought the sony hc96 , and it works fine with fce , i have
a mac book , unfortunately not a pro , but as long as you have firewire
it works perfect.

i ve been editing day in day out with this camera , and it goes like a kangeroo
no problems so fare, you ve bought a good camera ,which has good reviews according to magazins

Do you know what kind of files are compressed to the computer? I heard that on a PC using the provided software, the files are converted into MPEG format. Do they files reamin in DV format when dowloaded to the Mac via firewire?

If you capture via iMovie, the media will be "DV Stream"

If you capture via Final Cut Express HD, it will be DVCPRO NTSC.

By the way, for your information, if you capture HDV material in iMovie or FCE HD, the format will be Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC).

Sorry, but I am just beginning using iMovie with camcorders and what not. So does that mean that there will be no added compression to get the files off of the camcorder? That is my big concern - I want the least amont of compression possible. DV Stream... is that the same as a DV file?

DV stream is a quicktime container (file) that contains both video and audio track in one media.

DVPRO-NTSC is a quicktime container (file) that contains one video track and one audio track separatly.

DV on your camcorder is already compressed, but your captured material will not be recompressed upon capturing process.

It's the best quality you can get with DV consumer cameras.
