30" ACD Ridiculously grainy/sparkly??

I bought a 30" Apple Cinema HD Display 2-3 weeks ago and have been using it. I can't get over how grainy/sparkly this thing is.

It is WAY more grainy than my 9C60 Macbook Pro C2D's display, my iMac G5's display, or my Dell 2405fpw. In fact, on those 3 displays I just listed, I can get over the grain in about 10seconds in that I just stop noticing it).

But on the 30", it's just ALWAYS THERE. It looks like a thin film of dirt covering the screen, like when you get fingerprints on a cellphone screen or something. It is mostly visible with pure white or green screens, and almost invisible with blue or black screens. When I go back to my MBP it kills me how smooth the screen is on the MBP compared to the ACD, and I thought the MBP was grainy before I started using the ACD.

I was hoping that after a couple weeks I would stop noticing it but if anything, it's gotten more annoying.

It's a hinderance to me because it sort of kills the definition between whites and slightly off-whites, (which are used a lot in web-design) because the grain overpowers the difference in between two colours. For example, I can't see the repeating wavy pattern here: http://macheist.com/img/bundle_back.png unless I enlarge it). Also I am completely unable to evaluate JPEG noise unless I zoom up.

I went to the local Apple Store, and there 30" ACD looked just as bad as mine. So I guess, with my sample size of 2 units, every display has this issue. I just was wondering if my display had it to an abnormally high degree.

Does anyone have this problem with their 30" ACD?

Yes, I notice it too. I have never been happy with any monitor or notebook that has had an LG panel in it. LG (or LPL more correctly) seem to have anti-glare screens that really suffer from these scintillations more than their competitors. The only alternative is a 30" monitor with the Samsung panel in it. But you can't get one from Apple.

I used to see this when I used Boot Camp to run XP. I started up XP, then I had to unplug and replug the power cord that goes to the ACD from the white transformer box. (The one that comes out of the Medusa's head.) Then the ACD reset itself and the bright pixels would go away.

I've not had a problem when running OS X. My display looks great. I can see the slight gradation of colours on the URL that you supplied.

Yes, the bright pixels annoyed the **** out of me.

Interesting. I just got a new 23" Apple Cinema HD at work, replacing an older 20" with the plastic bezel. I was poking around here in this forum because I too find my monitor to be "grainy/sparkly" because of its coating, something I didn't experience with my older monitor or my Dell 2405 at home (connected to a Mac) or with the display on a friend's 17" MacBook Pro. Because I do alot of retouching, I'm concerned that it'll interefere with my judgements in highlight areas of images especially.

Yes I've got the same problem with my 23" cinema display. I guess it's a problem which started from the latest update in august (WWDC) Because I first got a panel which didn't have the problem. That oneI returned beacause it had dead pixels. Then when I got a new one last week I instantly noticed that this one was much brighter than my previous. So i guess this is a model after the update and the previous was an old one. Which makes sense because in August they received increased brightnes. Unfortunately I also noticed the terrible grain straight away. Like there is a protective film is still on the screen. It looks like this is due to the anti reflection coating on the screen. I also find it verry annoying, and I notice it all the time. I went to my local apple store, there the 23" and the 30" had the same problem, as well as the macbook pro. The 20" and the Imac didnt suffer from this problem. So now I decided to return this one as well, and just wait for the next panel update...
