Use of text to speech in iBooks

Hello.

I have been using the Text to Speech function offered by iOS ever since I bought my old iPhone 4S with iOS 9 (I think).

Today I have a new iPhone 7 with iOS 11.1.1 that I have recently upgraded from the previous version. It seems to me that the more iOS progresses to newer versions the more features like that of Text To Speech cease to work properly rendering them virtually useless.

To start with, the identification of the language of the books within iBooks doesn't work most of the time (Sometimes cancelling the TTS function and restarting it with the double swipe starts in an entirely new language irrespective of the languages that are comonly used on the iPhone). I regularly work with English, Spanish, French and Catalonian languages and this problem renders the TTS function virtually useless (Catalonian language is not fully supported to make matters even worse).

I have detected that the worst behaviour of the TTS function within iBooks occurs specially when reading PDF files. When reading epub or other formats it seems to behave better (I only use pdf and epub).

What usually happens is that after doing the double swipe down on the starting page it begins to read properly but when it reaches the end of the page and flips to the next page it doesn't start at the top of the next page. Instead it skips most of the page and reads the last paragraph. If the first page has a page number numeral at the very bottom it reads the number 1 (For example) and when flipping to the next page it reads the bottom of the nexts page number 2 and carries doing that flipping page after page reading only the numerals 3, 4, 5 etc. at the bottom and skipping the text in the pages. As I said completely useless.

This flaws together with the poor functionality of Siri as an assistant User uploaded file(As compared to Google) are making me reconsider very seriously wether my next phone is going to be an iPhone.

I just bought an iPad Pro. I’m having exactly the same problem. The pro is expensive and set to be the replacement of the old iPad line. If this is how Apple has for their best tablet, it wont be long for the entire iPad line to go out of busines.

I bought it because I needed the Text To Speech fuction. Looks like Apple either never heard of the complaint, or they just don’t care about the problem. I’m going to call technical support, if the problem can’t be solved, I’m returning the iPad Pro. Luckily I am still well within the 90-day return window Costco offers.

I’m also having this problem with more than books. I updated the Kindle app on Feb 23 & it worked fine until I updated the latest iOS a day or two after that. It will only speak the first page of Pages or PDF documents & stop. This Speak feature comes under Accessibility & I assume is meant to help those with vision problems. I would think Apple would want to fix this quickly forthose with this handicap at the very least. This is also the case with my iPad Pro.
