Why aren’t my contacts’ phone numbers coming up when I use the message app to text them?

This is a new problem with my Iphone 6. When I go to the message app and start typing the name of a contact, their phone number does not come up as an option even though it is stored in my contacts. Their email address comes up but not their phone number. To text them, I have to go into contacts, find them, them click on the little “message” icon in order to send them a text.

Hello SAustell,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are unable to see phone numbers for contacts in the Messages app. To help resolve this issue, temporarily turn off Contacts syncing in Settings > Accounts & Passwords, then force close the Messages app and restart your iPhone as iOS clears cached data and does other system optimizations when you turn your device off and on. Then turn contact syncing back on and test your issue in the Messages app.

Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If you're still having this issue, force close the Messages app again, then go to the Contacts app and create a new contact with a name and phone number. Open the Messages app again and test your issue.

Cheers!

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, that didn’t work but I figured out how to fix it. Here is how I did it for anyone else who is having this issue. To recap, here is my issue. When I wanted to text someone, I went to Messages and started typing their name. (This wasn’t happening with all contacts, just some.) Their email address would come up but not their phone number even though both were listed under their name in my Contacts. Thus, I couldn’t text them unless I actually went to contacts, pulled them up, and hit the little “text” button. How to fix it: Pull up the contact in your contact list, scroll down to bottom and click on “Linked Contacts: Icloud.” Click on the button that says, “Use this name for unified card.” Problem solved!
