I have a few issues backing up my macbook pro

1. I recently upgraded my mb pro. I was using WD 500 GB external drive to backup my old MB. Now when I try to back up my new MB the back up is stuck at "preparing to backup".

2. I deleted some old backups because the backup drive was getting full. Now those deleted files stay in trash. I can never empty the trash.

Is there any way to fix these two problems? Experts please help.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Hi,

1. TM will have to start a brand new backup, it won't just keep going from your old to your new Mac. This will take hours, if everything else is ok.

2. This may be related to #1. There is a method to deleting old backups, if that's ever needed (TM is supposed to do that on its own). It doesn't work to just drag things to the trash. I think you're going to have to erase the TM backup disk in Disk Utility and start a new TM backup.
