What VPN does is provide a level of anonymity for you so that unwanted visitors cannot get into your computer. This is important for when you are using Wi-Fi or Ethernet at unsecured locations like coffee shops, airports, libraries, etc. VPN provides security while on the Web.
There are hundreds of VPN services for the Mac. Most are satisfactory and if any proprietary software is needed it is usually free. But the service itself is not free.
