Why is Apple Pay sharing my credit card number?

I have noticed at some merchants where I use Apple Pay that the receipt is displaying the last four digits of my actual credit card number. I thought part of the whole purpose of Apple Pay was to keep that information from the merchant. It should be using the Device Account Number that is created and that is what should appear on my receipts correct?

I have verified in my phone that the Device Account Number does have a different last 4 than my actual card. I would think the only way a merchant would be able to print my actual last 4 on the receipt would be if my real credit card number was being shared with them.

At other retailers, I have used Apple Pay and it shows a different last 4 than my actual card.

Hi

I'm afraid that no-one here can advise you why that is the case.

It should not be possible for Apple Pay to send your card number to the store terminal for it to print, as Apple Pay does not keep that information. It maintains the last 4 digits in the Apple Pay App so you can more easily identify the card.

Without the rest of the number, the last 4 digits are useless.

Beyond that, there should be no way for the terminal to print those last numbers. Where exactly on the receipt are they appearing?

Its possibly its a different number that just happens to match the last 4 numbers of your card for whatever reason.

About Apple Pay - Apple Support

When you pay in stores, neither Apple nor your device sends your actual card numbers to merchants. When you pay within apps and on the web in Safari,2 the merchant will only receive information like name, email address, billing and shipping addresses that you authorize to share to fulfill your order. Apple Pay retains anonymous transaction information such as approximate purchase amount. This information can’t be tied back to you and never includes what you're buying. Apps that use Apple Pay must have a privacy policy that you can view, which governs the use of your data.
