iPhone 8 plus touch ID not working

I bought my new iPhone 8 plus phone today and set it up and everything as soon as i try to register my touchID it fails, it won’t even read my finger! I have tried clean the button, washed my hands like 4 times nothing seems to work!! Rebooted it and a message comes on saying ‘Phone disabled wait 5 minutes’ why would it do that if it’s a new phone, I’m on IOS 11.1.1

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! I see from your post that you are having trouble with Touch ID on your new iPhone 8 Plus and now the iPhone is disabled.

First, I'd like to say congratulations on your new iPhone! I know it's definitely a bother when certain features will not work as expected on a new device, and I want to do what I can to help you as much as possible. You did a great job troubleshooting and isolating any possible issues with your hands by washing them and making sure the Home button was clean.

In addition to doing that, I would also recommend you try the steps found here in this article called: Get help with Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad .

I'm having same problem with two 8 Plus iPhones. Article link is basic setup - same since i Phone 5S.

The 8 Plus seems to "recognize" fingerprints with much less input required than the mechanical home button. I even create 2 entries for my right thumb since I work with my hands. By the end of 24-36 hours, Touch ID is working about 30-40% of the time.

Delete and re-enter fingerprints and it's great for another X hours.

Big change from 6S Plus which was VERY reliable with Touch ID. The new style home button seems to be the difference for me.

I even went back to my 6S Plus (kept it for a backup) for a few days and confirmed that it works great using same 11.2 firmware.
