iPhone X, "Hey Siri" does not work with headphones

I recently switched to the iPhone X from an iPhone 7 plus. One issue that I've run into is that my iPhone X doesn't seem to listen to my wired headphones' microphone for "hey Siri". I don't think it's an issue with the IOS 11 software as it worked fine on my iPhone 7 Plus with that version. Is this a known bug that's exclusive to the iPhone x?

I haven't tried a different set of headphones. If I click the button on the headset, I can prompt siri and she responds to the voice commands just fine. Also, I noticed yesterday, that if maps is open giving directions, the mic is "hot" and siri responds to "hey siri". With my iPhone 7 plus, the mic was always "hot" and I didn't have an issue.

It's software, they're simply not listening for the headphone mic, maybe the front facing one as well. I've noticed that if the screen is dark, "hey siri" does nothing. (without the headphones in) if you lift up the phone and it initiates face ID (even if it doesn't complete recognition), it will respond to "Hey Siri".

I'm surprised no one else is running into this.

It sounds like it might be the microphone on the headphones. If you are listening through headphones, Siri will be listening through the microphone on the headphones. Siri hears me through the microphone on my air pods and two different sets of corded headphones. One with the lightning connector and one with an adapter.

Also, double check that you have version 11.1.1 of the IOS in General settings, about. If not, update your IOS and be sure to restart the phone.

Good luck!

P.S. I finally figured out why "Hey Siri" was not hearing me and I feel like an idiot. :-) The protective film that I put on the front of the phone was covering the front facing microphone. I made a small adjustment to the position of the film and Voila! Siri's back.

I've bought a new pair of headphones and done some testing. The phone doesn't appear to listen to the headset microphone unless the phone has been unlocked. If you're not using headphones, it apparently does not have this requirement.

Still, with my iPhone 7 Plus, I could throw the phone in my back pocket or in the console of my car and use my headphones and "Hey Siri" to send texts and make phone calls. This is no longer the case and I believe it to be outside of the intended behavior of the software.
