Macbook Pro 13.3 Retina flashing display.

Hi. I've already booked an appointment to get my laptop checked but it's not for a few days so I'm super anxious.

The problem is that my screen keeps randomly flashing and glitching. It flashes colours in a diagonal pattern. (see attached photo).

What happens is that it will keep flashing this but when i touch the trackpad or type again, my computer seems completely fine. Just when it's inactive for about two seconds, the glitching will comeback and not stop until you do something. When plugged into my external monitor, the flashing does not occur. It's just been happening for a couple of hours at this point.

How the problem started is that I was using my laptop then suddenly the display went black (like turned-off black) then I restarted my computer a couple times and got to this stage.

Please help, I'm having very high anxiety because I have a bunch of assignments do all of which that absolutely REQUIRE my computer.

First, what OS do you have installed? High Sierra or otherwise? Try reinstalling your OS it might do something (back up first!)

Although, it looks like your computer's GPU may be failing or the built in monitor has broken (just by looking at the picture). You were right to make an appointment at an Apple Genius Bar (or someplace, preferably them tbh) to have it checked out and see if any repair options are available.

I do have High Sierra installed. I may try to do a reinstallation later tonight but I went to bed and now that I'm using my computer, it seems that everything is back to normal. Should I still go to the genius bar just to make sure that my computer is running as it's supposed to?

I'm no longer under warranty so do you know how much fixing the GPU and the monitor would cost? 😟

I would take it to Apple just in case to make sure it's not a serious hardware failure (it may be some weird software fluke that doesn't cost money to fix).

As for the cost, I'm not sure but if it's the gpu the entire logic board would have to be replaced as Apple soldered everything onto the logic board starting with the Retina MacBooks making it not really fixable without total replacement. Apple does offer screen replacement (generally under warranty) so that is possible but I'm not sure the out of warranty price - or if they'll do it.

Again, keep your appointment and have it checked out, they can give you more detailed information on the problem and/if it is fixable a price.
