Random Display Color Pattern on Shutdown

Hi.

This is a brand-new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (more configuration details below). Suddenly, for no apparent reason, during shutdown and restart the display shows a random pattern of colors on a black background (see attached image).

I have reset the NVRAM and the SMC as advised (or think I have -- not sure how to tell if they were successfully reset), but the problem persists. The pattern varies from shutdown to shutdown. I am running an external Dell monitor through an OWC Thunderbolt dock using a Thunderbolt-to-USB-C adapter. The color pattern appears on the MacBook Pro screen, not the Dell monitor, but the Dell monitor shows the cursor pointer for as long as it takes the computer to shut down. The problem may have begun around the time I started editing video with Adobe Premiere Pro, but I don't know if this is relevant or a coincidence.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

Hello giraut.

Thanks for joining us at the Apple Support Communities. It looks like your MacBook Pro with Touch Bar is having video display issues. Definitely not something that is expected for a brand new Mac.

You've done the same troubleshooting I'd have suggested. At this point I would recommend that you Contact Apple Support for further assistance.

Best wishes.

Well, I called Apple Support and we were on the phone for about 90 minutes. We did a number of things, so I'm not 100% sure what fixed the problem, but the problem is fixed, and I'm pretty sure it was connected to the dock through which I was running both my external display and an external hard drive. The computer seemed not to be able to handle these two peripherals being plugged in through the dock at the same time. I took the dock out of the equation and connected the drive and the display to different USB-C ports, and that seemed to solve the problem -- I haven't had it since. For what it's worth, I suggest getting on the phone with Apple Support and running through a bunch of troubleshooting moves, which are intended to narrow down where the problem originates. It was a slog going through them all, but the result was good. Good luck.
